Furuspinneren er en brungrå sommerfuglart, en nattsvermer, med et rustbrunt tverrbånd og en kvit flekk. Midt på sommeren legger denne sommerfuglen egg på furustammene, gjerne på reinlavbevokste, karrige moer, Larvene går straks løs på baret. Når høsten kommer kryper de ned på bakken og finner skjul mot snøen og vinterkulda. Påfølgende vår kryper de opp i trærne igjen, der de spiser av barmassen gjennom hele sommersesongen, før de nok en gang kryper ned på bakken for å søke ly for vinteren. Neste vår kryper de igjen opp i treet for å spise mer bar, før de forpupper seg i askebrune kokonger. Etter cirka tre uker i dette stadiet kommer de ut som sommerfugler. I 1900 og 1901 ble det observert enorme mengder furuspinnerlarver i furuskogen i Elverum og i Sogn. Særlig situasjonen i Elverum ble viet stor oppmerksomhet, for der truet insektene store verdier, i og med at de spiste mesteparten av barmassen og lammet trærnes assimilasjonsevne, slik at de døde. Skogeierne møtte problemet ved å stryke klebrig limmasse i ringer rundt trestammene, for å stanse larvene på deres vandring oppover trestammene. De massive forekomstene av furuspinnerlarver forsvant i løpet av tre-fire år. Seinere har vi ikke hatt tilsvarende situasjoner. Overlærer Albert Karsten Myhrwold (1856-1920) ved Norges Landbrukshøiskole kunne imidlertid fortelle at det samme insektet hadde herjet i viktige skogområder i Mellom-Europa i 1860- og 1880-åra. I det noe varmere klimaet der hadde larvene en ettårig utviklingssyklus. Myhrwold refererte også til et dokument som tydet på at Elverum hadde hatt enorme forekomster av furuspinnerlarver som ødela mye skog i 1815 også. Han omtalte furuspinneren med det latinske navnet «Bombyx pini, Gastropacha pini», i moderne litteratur brukes betegnelsen «Dendrolimus pini».

Furuspinneren er ei nattsommerfugllarve, som har sitt tilhold på tørre sand- og grusmoer. Sommerfuglen legger egg i barken på trærne. Om høsten, når kulda kommer, kryper larvene nedover stammene og overvintrer i mosedekket. Om våren kryper de igjen oppover stammene og angriper nålene på trærne, og ved store oppblomstinger i bestandet kan de bli ribbet for bar. For å forhindre slike skader ble det påstrøket klebrig lim i en ring rundt trestammene, der larvene ble stanset. Fotografiet viser en furustamme der larvenes vandring er stanset under «limringen». I bakgrunnen skimtes en del nedhogd ungskog, antakelig furuspinnerangrepne og ødelagte trær.
Dette fotografiet er hentet fra et arkiv der bildene i hovedsak er tatt av medarbeidere fra Skogdirektørens kontor (Skogdirektoratet, seinere Direktoratet for statens skoger og Statskog SF) i samband med befaringsreiser i forvaltningsdistriktene. Negativsamlinga, med samme nummerering, er også overlatt til museet, men mye mangler og noe er dårlig bevart, blant annet fordi opptakene i hovedsak er gjort på nitratfilm. Dette bildet har ikke bevart originalnegativ. I det fotografiske materialet Norsk Skogmuseum har overtatt etter den statlige skogetaten finnes også et større antall diaskopier, samt originale positivkopier utenfor katalogsystemet, men med samme originalnummerering fra DSS. Samlinga omfatter eller et betydelig antall nyere positivkopier som er registrert på emne og person hos DSS, uten egne nummer.
