Raset kom ein tysdag kveld i nitida den 8. august 1933. Ein diger stein losna frå toppen av Tveitanuten, og drog med seg ein hale av stein på vegen ned til boligområdet «Verdens ende» sør for Tyssedal hotell. Tre unge jenter som var ute og spaserte vart tekne av raset som spreidde seg over ei veglengde på 110 meter. Alle tre vart henta med sjukebilar, men to av dei klarte seg ikkje - Åse (Mossa) på 16 og Ruth på 19. Syster til Ruth, 15 år gamle Lilly, hadde fått eine beinet rive av, og låg lenge på sjukehus, men klarde seg til slutt.
Raset gjorde også noko materiell skade. Fem båtar i hamna vart smadra, det var ein mann i ein av dei, men han kom seg uskadd i land då båten sokk under han. Kraftlinene frå Tyssedal til Odda og Eitrheimsneset vart skadde, og kablane låg nede i vegen. Zinken og Smelteverket miste straumen. Eit stort mannskap fekk rydda vegen slik at han vart farande seinare på kvelden."Veien" eller "Gamle Oddaveg". Staden der dei siste husa låg før ein tok til på vegen mot Odda vart etter utbygginga av Tyssedal kalla "Verdens ende". Her var det ei tid kafé, mjølkeutsal, bakarforretning, skomakarverkstad, slaktarbutikk og bensinstasjon. Husa vart etter kvart rivne då fabrikken bygde ut. Den gamle vegen mellom Tyssedal og Odda vart fullført på naudsarbeid i 1922. Namnet Gamle Oddaveg kom då den nye vegen med samanhengande tunell frå Lindenes til Tyssedal opna. På den gamle vegen var det fire tunellar, to korte, og to noko lengre.
