Lektaren Sørfjorden vart innkjøpt til Oddafabrikkane (karbidfabrikken Alby United Carbide Factory) i 1913 for transport frå Skaftun / Skaftå kalksteinsgruve, Bruvik på Osterøy. Båten var borte frå Odda då fabrikken sto mellom 1920 og 1924, men blei kjøpt tilbake ("hjemkjøpt") i 1924 og var i drift fram til siste last gjekk frå Skaftun gruver ved nedlegginga i mai 1961. (jfr Rokne i Odda Smelteverk AS i femti år.)
Kalksteinbåten gjekk fullasta med flyktningar langs vestsida av fjorden då Odda hadde blitt bomba 23. april 1940. Båten henta også kassavis med appelsiner frå den norske båten "San Miguel" som låg til kai i Ulvik krigsdagane, fullasta med appelsiner. Fire tyske torpedobåtar kom inn fjorden, og starta skyta mot land. Mannskapet på San Miguel hadde opna ventilane i botnen av båten for å senka han for å hindra at han fall i tyske hender. På førehand hadde dei lossa båten for dei fleste av dei i alt 27 000 kassane med appelsin og delt dei ut gratis til alle som ville ha. Alle bygdene i Hardanger fekk meir appelsiner enn dei kunne eta desse dagane.
