Storsjøen i Odal er bortimot 50 kvadratkilometer stor, 16 kilometer lang og opptil 7, 5 meter bred. Den har flere sidearmer, blant annet Sandsjøen, hvor dette fotografiet er tatt. Nedslagsfeltet til Storsjøen er på bortimot 800 kvadratkilometer, og mesteparten av dette nedslagsfeltet er skogsterreng. Dette innebar at betydelige tømmerkvanta ble fløtet i sjøen med tilstøtende sidevassdrag, i Nord-Odal og Romedal (Stange). Mye av romedalstømmeret kom til Sandsjøen via Råså'n, en mindre sjø nord for tettstedet Sand, og hit til Sandsjøen. Her, ved Svennebyhagen, hadde for øvrig Storsjø-fløtinga en slags base for fløtingsbåter og mannskaper. I den perioden dette fotografiet er fra var det to kraftige, motoriserte varpebåter - en "Sandspram" og en "Mo-pram" - samt en mindre motorbår i Råså'n.
Sjøfløtinga i Storsjøen var helt spesiell. Dette skyldtes av høydeforskjellen mellom utløpet av sjøen (i den sidearmen som kalles Seimsjøen) og Glomma var svært liten. Ved normalvannstand rant Storsjøvannet gjennom Oppstadåa mot Glomma. Når det var flom i Glomma var forholdet omvendt. Da rant det vann fra Glomma gjennom den samme elva motsatt veg, mot Storsjøen. I slike perioder måtte det lenser til for å hindre at glommatømmeret drev inn i Storsjøen. For bygdene langs Glomma, sør for Skarnes i Sør-Odal, betydde dette at Storsjøen ble en slags sikkerhetsventil som demte opp for de mest dramatiske flomsituasjonene. Men for fløtinga i Storsjøen innebar den vekslende strømretningen i Oppstadåa problemer. Virket kunne ikke fløtes motstrøms, så i perioder med flom i Glomma eller med kraftig sønnavær ble virket "ringet" inn som det ble sagt i Odalen, samlet i bommer, som ble forankret i steinblokker, som odølene kalte "hengetjuver". Store steinblokker i strandsonen kunne brukes som slike forankringspunkter, men odølene fikk også støpt betongblokker, som ble kjørt på isen vinterstid. Der ble de liggende til isen smeltet, slik at "hengetjuvene" sank og kunne brukes som undersjøiske oppankringspunker når tømmerfløtinga begynte om våren.

Sentralt i bildet skimtes et kirkespir som rager mot himmelen, antakelig Sand kirke. Ifølge en innskrift på et albumoppslag i Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings album nr. 13 skal dette og flere andre bilder på de samme albumbladene være tatt i nærheten av et bruk ved navn Svennebyhagen, som var en slags base for sjøfløtinga i Storsjøen med oppankringssted for båter og «fløtarstuggu».

Da fløtinga i Glomma ble avviklet i 1985 ble det ordnet slik at fellesfløtingsforeningens arkivsaker ble overlatt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å fortsette å oppbevare dem i det eksisterende arkivrommet ved Fellesfløtingsforeningens kontor på Fetsund. Amanuensis Øivind Vestheim fra Norsk Skogbruksmuseum veiledet lokale prosjektansatte, som startet ordning av materialet. Den daglige forvaltningen av arkivene er seinere overtatt av medarbeidere fra museet som ble etablert på Fetsund lenser i 1990. Fotosamlinga fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforening ble overført til daværende Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i Elverum. Materialet består av 72 album. Museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad har reprodusert de fleste av opptakene i dette materialet og skrevet negativnummere i albumene han har utført repro fra. Det finnes også originalnegativer til en del av motivene. Disse skal være merket og ordnet i mapper etter at de kom til museet.
Other informationJohs. Johannesen ble født i Oslo 16. mai 1877. Han tok artium i 1895, og tre år seinere ble han uteksaminert som bygningsingeniør fra Kristiania tekniske skole. Deretter var han ansatt ved Gleim og Eyde i Lübeck, seinere ved Eydes ingeniørkontor i Kristiania. I perioden 1900-01 studerte han ved den tekniske høgskolen i Dresden. I 1902 ble han fløtingsinspektør i Glomma-vassdraget, og fire år seinere ble han utnevnt til direktør i Christiania Tømmerdirektion, seinere kalt Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening. Denne stillingen hadde han fram til våren 1948, da han nådde aldersgrensen. Johannesen var ofte medlem av ulike tekniske kommisjoner, både i og utenfor fløtingsvesenet. Han skal blant annet ha høstet anerkjennelse for den innsatsen han gjorde i grenseforhandlinger med Russland. Johannesen var medlem av hovedstyret i Norsk Ingeniørforening fra 1925 til 1933, og i de tre siste åra av denne perioden var han styreleder med tittelen "president". Johs.
