Etter at kraftutbygginga ved Kykkelsrud i Askim kom i gang kastet ingeniøren Samuel Eyde (1866-1940) fra Arendal sine øyne på strykene ved Vamma, cirka 50 kilometer lengre nede i elveløpet. Eyde var på dette tidspunktet ingen rik mann, men han hadde ressurssterke kontakter i Sverige som han fikk med seg i A/S Vamma Fossekompagni. Ettersom Vammastrykene hadde forholdsvis liten fallhøyde, kjøpte selskapet også en rekke andre stryk og småfosser like ovenfor. Dermed disponerte utbyggerne en fallhøyde på cirka 27 meter. Det drøyde imidlertid med utbygginga, for Eyde og kompanjongene hans hadde storprosjekter under utvikling på Rjukan og Notodden (Norsk Hydro). Dambygginga ved Vamma startet i 1907. Da dammen begynte å komme på plass oppsto det raskt konflikter med Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion, for det viste seg at fløtingsvirket hadde lett for å bli hengende på konstruksjonen. Forsøk på lede det inn i et trangt sideløp førte til omfattende brekkasjer. Dette utløste vanskelige forhandlinger og rettssaker. For Vamma Fossekompagni var det største problemet å skaffe kapital til bygging av kraftstasjonen. Eyde innledet derfor forhandlinger, først med Kristiania kommune (som han mente ville få behov for kraften), deretter med den delvis tyskeide konkurrenten A/S Hafslund. I 1912 ble det til at Hafslund overtok fallrettighetene og utbyggingsprosjektet. Fra da av ble det satt store ressurser og mye mannskap inn i arbeidet. Anlegget besto av en 280 meter lang dam med femten vanninntak til turbiner, tømmerrenne, flomløp og uttappingsløp. Nedenfor, delvis i elveløpet, bygde entreprenørselskapet A/S Høyer Ellefsen en kraftstasjon etter arkitekt Thorvald Astrups (1876-1940) tegninger. Anlegget kom i drift fra 1915. Askimordføreren døpte den nye, store kraftverksdammen «Vammasjøen».
Ved nabokraftverket Kykkelsrud var dammen plassert i overkant av fossen, den var lav og endringene i elvelandskapet ble små. Ved Vamma ble det motsatt: Dammen (demningen) ble plassert nedenfor strykene, den ble høy og elveløpet ble fullstendig forandret. Vannet som kom ut fra anlegget hadde en voldsom hastighet ned i et basseng, der det oppsto en roterende strøm som fløtingstømmeret lett ble trukket inn i. Dette slet voldsomt på stokkene. Kraftselskapet måtte derfor bygge ei tømmerrenne som startet ovenfor dammen og endte nedenfor bassenget med den kraftige strømvirvelen. Tømmerrenna viste seg imidlertid underdimensjonert, og i 1925-27 ble det bygd en tolv meter bred tømmerkanal, noe som innebar en bedre og mer permanent løsning for Glomma fellesfløtingsforening.

Helt til høyre ser vi silhuetten av en konstruksjon, antakelig et støpt kar, med en stolpe som rager oppover. Ellers domineres bildet av store mengder sprutende og skummende vann.
Da fløtinga i Glomma ble avviklet i 1985 ble det ordnet slik at fellesfløtingsforeningens arkivsaker ble overlatt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å fortsette å oppbevare dem i det eksisterende arkivrommet ved Fellesfløtingsforeningens kontor på Fetsund. Amanuensis Øivind Vestheim fra Norsk Skogbruksmuseum veiledet lokale medarbeidere som startet ordning av materialet. Den daglige forvaltningen av arkivene er seinere overtatt av medarbeidere fra museet som ble etablert på Fetsund lenser i 1990. Fotosamlinga fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforening ble overført til daværende Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i Elverum. Materialet består av 72 album. Museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad har reprodusert de fleste av opptakene i dette materialet og skrevet negativnummere i albumene han har utført repro fra. Det finnes også originalnegativer til en del av motivene. Disse skal være merket og ordnet i mapper etter at de kom til museet.
Other informationJohs. Johannesen ble født i Oslo 16. mai 1877. Han tok artium i 1895, og tre år seinere ble han uteksaminert som bygningsingeniør fra Kristiania tekniske skole. Deretter var han ansatt ved Gleim og Eyde i Lübeck, seinere ved Eydes ingeniørkontor i Kristiania. I perioden 1900-01 studerte han ved den tekniske høgskolen i Dresden. I 1902 ble han fløtingsinspektør i Glomma-vassdraget, og fire år seinere ble han utnevnt til direktør i Christiania Tømmerdirektion, seinere kalt Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening. Denne stillingen hadde han fram til våren 1948, da han nådde aldersgrensen. Johannesen var ofte medlem av ulike tekniske kommisjoner, både i og utenfor fløtingsvesenet. Han skal blant annet ha høstet anerkjennelse for den innsatsen han gjorde i grenseforhandlinger med Russland. Johannesen var medlem av hovedstyret i Norsk Ingeniørforening fra 1925 til 1933, og i de tre siste åra av denne perioden var han styreleder med tittelen "president". Johs.
