Fotografiet er fra Anna Grostøls samlinger. Samlingene består av skriftlige notater, fotografier, film og tekstilprøver. Det omfattende materialet er et resultat av Anna Grostøls (30.4.1894 – 4.1.1962) betydningsfulle granskingsarbeid i norske bygder på 1920- til 1950-tallet. Grostøl var opprinnelig lærer, men brukte fritiden til å samle kunnskap om naturalhusholdet i Norge som var i ferd med å forsvinne – fra daglige arbeidsoppgaver til husflid og håndverk. Hennes arbeidsmetode besto i å reise rundt og fotografere, filme og snakke med folk om gamle arbeidsteknikker og virksomheten på gårdene.
Samlingene, som ble overført til Norsk Folkemuseum i 1976, omfatter et ca. 1400 siders upublisert manuskript om ulike kulturhistoriske temaer, 1254 negativer, 1045 tekstilprøver og flere dokumentarfilmer. Som en del av fotosamlingen finnes det fotomateriale med notater på samisk og norsk fra Grostøls arbeid i Troms og Finnmark (1947-1955).
