Olav Tjønneland ble født i Langvike i Grimstad 5 september 1914. Mor og far kom fra Vigsdalen i Sunnfjord, og var oppvokst på to nabogårder. Når Olav var 2 år gammel flyttet familien til Tjøme. Tjønneland tok middelskole i Tønsberg, hvor han bodde på hybel i ukedagene og hjemme hos familien på Tjøme i helgene. Artium tok han i Eidsvoll Landgymnas og bodde da permanent på hybel. Etter artium reiste han til Trondheim for å studere til sivilingeniør ved kjemiavdelingen ved byens høyskole. Etter endt utdannelse jobbet Tjønneland i en kort periode for Jotun fabrikk i Sandefjord, og 1. februar 1939 ble han ansatt som fotoingeniør for Kodak konsernet. Tjønneland giftet seg i 1940. Under krigen ledet han kurser i flyfotografering, sammen med Ole Reistad på Kjeller. Virksomheten som flyfotograf fortsatte Tjønneland også etter krigen, men er i denne perioden mest kjent for sin virksomhet som foredragsholder.Siden etterkrigstiden har Tjønneland fremført omkring 5000 foredrag i folkeakademier, folkehøyskoler og foreninger over hele landet. Emnene har vært kulturhistoriske og kulturgeografiske - både fra Norge og verden ellers. Tjønneland er også kjent for å ha lært mange å fotografere gjennom sine fotokurs og lysbildeforedrag om ulike fotografiske teknikker.
