  • My GrandFather Johan Berhard Carlsen's Photo Studio was located at Stor Torvet #12, adjacent to Domkirken. (Around the corner from Glass Magasinet.) I am sure he felt great sympathy for the hard working conditions of the Blomsterselgersker fra Domkirkebasarene. This photo from 1900 is even more interesting when you learn that it was "hand colored" after the photo was taken. My own Mother Alfhild & her sister Ragnhild was trained to do much of this extra work in his studio. In my late teen years, before leaving for "Amerika" at 17 yrs, even I worked there. And even in 1956; it was nothing like photo studios nowadays. The smell & the fumes & the RED light !!! I can just imagine what it was like in the early 1900's.
