I boka «Kniver og knivmakere» (1990) skriver Per Thoresen følgende om Olav Innleggen (1926-1995):
«Olav Innleggen, Skien
I landlige omgivelser i nærheten av Ibsens Venstøp bor Olav Innleggen, i et hus av stampejord, som han og kona Sonja har bygd praktisk talt på egenhånd. Før hadde huset flatt tak, nå har det fått vanlig skråtak og ser ut som et hvilket som helst murhus.
Han smir både vanlige knivblader og damascerte, i mange fasonger og størrelser. I smia står det en liten fjærhammer som han ikke kunne tenke seg damascering uten, og det kommer stadig nye ting til. I det siste har han bygd på smia, og nå har han fått innlagt både telefon og ringeapparat fra husdøra, så det ser ut til at han har planer om å være mye der.
I et eget verksted lager han kniver, både staskniver og brukskniver. Så mange knivene blir det likevel ikke, han er mest interessert i å smi. Han graverer holkene flatt, altså i den flate sølvplata før den blir formet til holk. Innleggen lager pene staskniver, men han har ikke lagt ned nok arbeid i dekoren til at han kan måle seg med spesialistene. Likevel er det mange som har Innleggen-kniv høyt på ønskelista, også fordi det er morsomt å ha en kniv fra en god smed.
Bruksknivene hans er gjerne jaktkniver, med god flåkurve i bladene. Bladene er ofte damascerte, både i stas- og brukskniver.
Det første bladet smidde han i tolvårsalderen, da han bodde i Bø. Det var knivsmeder i nærheten, og han fikk være i smia til en av dem når han ville.
Da han ble syk og måtte slutte i bilbransjen, begynte han å smi knivblader. Tidligere hobbyvirksomhet som speiderleder og hundedommer ble det vanskelig å fortsette med. Han kunne ikke lenger planlegge så langsiktig, men måtte finne på noe som han kunne begynne med eller legge fra seg straks, alt etter dagsformen. Han fikk lyst til å smi og leste lærebøker om stål og smiing og øvde og øvde. Det var i 1978 at det begynte for alvor.
Ulf Lie var ivrig etter å hjelpe ham i gang. Smia kom opp i 1984, og i 1986 kom de første damascenerbladene. De første bladene er signert «OI» med grove bokstaver.
Damascering var ikke uten komplikasjoner. Ulf Lie, Harry Kastmo og Innleggen styrte og greide. Ingen av dem hadde rare erfaringen med denne kunsten, selv om de visste en hel del i teorien. Innleggen forteller om det første forsøket. De hadde surret sammen biter av jern og stål med ståltråd. Lie skulle prøve først. Da han slo med hammeren, fløy bitene til alle kanter. Det så mørkt ut. Siden fant der ut hvordan det skulle gjøres, og nå er kunnskapen godt spredd i Skien-miljøet og langt utenfor.
De første damascenerbladene var av jern og stål, nå har han kuttet ut jernet og bruker en kombinasjon av seks ulike ståltyper. Knivbladene hans har fått førstepremier på Dyrsku’n flere ganger.
Vanlige blader smir han av Thyrodur og vinkeljern. Han fikk tak i gammelt vinkeljern nesten uten karboninnhold og svært godt å smi med. Bladene er med eller uten smellopp, med ruglete eller glatt overflate.
I de arbeidskrevende damascenerbladene varierer han mønstrene fra det groveste til det fineste, med få eller mange lag. Han har levert blader til mange knivmakere, og de er ofte å se i andres kniver på utstillinger.
Olav Innleggen har hatt innflytelse på måten knivblader blir smidd på de kanter, og på hvordan de ser ut. Han har nemlig hatt en rekke elever i smia, ikke som kurs med mange deltakere, men som individuell undervisning. Sønnen Rune er også i gang med å smi, og på veggen i verkstedet henger en kniv fra Aasmund Voldbakken, som takk for smedkurset.»
