Fløyten er formet som en geit etter tradisjonen fra Hviterussland om å blåse i dyreformede fløyter rundt juletider.
Alt i førkristne tider (kristendommen kom til disse områdene i slutten av det 10. hundreåret) har den gamle slaviske høytiden ”kaljada” blitt feiret i Hviterussland. Vikingene var kanskje også vitne til denne feiringa, siden ruta deres til Svartehavet og tilbake gjekk gjennom dette landet.
Kaljada ble vanligvis feira i slutten av desember, etter den lengste natta i året. Festen strakk seg over flere dager. Da kristentroen kom smelta han på mange måter sammen med Kirken sin julefeiring – og på hviterussisk er ordet for ”jul” fremdeles nettopp ”kaljada.” (Tilsvarande er adjektivet ”jule-” bevart som ”kaljadny.”)
Under kaljady-feiringen prøvde man å forutse neste års avling. Man tente store bål utendørs, for at det skulle bli varmt fortere. Om våren ”kom” trekkfuglane med varme fra sør; derfor bakte kvinnene brød forma som fugler og dyr for å skynde enda mer på våren og varmen. De unge ikledde seg fugle- og dyremasker, og gikk fra hus til hus med sang og spøk for å ønske eierene god avling, rikdom og helse. Til gjengjeld ble de bedt inn til det festdekte bordet.
Etter at gildet var slutt tok sangen og leken over. Hovudrollen i desse ritulene var det geita som hadde. Slavarane trodde på geita sin makt: Der kor geita gikk, regna de med at det ble god avling.
I kaldjady-lekane (og ikke bare der) ble det benyttet fløyter forma som dyr og fugler. Fløytene var gjordt av leire eller tre.
Denne geita som museet har er laget av en ung håndtverker fra byen Ivenets, i nærheten av Minsk.
