Erling Gjone (1898-1990) ble utdannet som arkitekt ved Norges Tekniske Høgskole i Trondheim 1920.
I årene 1925 til 1940 samarbeidet han med professor Johan Meyer (1860-1940) om innsamling og bearbeiding av materiale til Meyers verk "Fortids Kunst i Norges Bygder" (17 hefter, 1908-39) ved å reise rundt i bygdene, måle opp, lage tegninger og male akvareller av bygninger og kunsthåndverk.
Erling Gjone ble i 1936 dosent i Eldre norsk byggekunst, i 1947 professor i Byggekunstens historie ved NTH. Han har satt sitt preg på utallige norske arkitekter gjennom sitt virke ved NTH. Han bidro ved restaureringsarbeider ved flere store kirkeprosjekter. Sin fremste innsats gjorde Gjone innen det historiske området, også ved å inneha en rekke sentrale verv.
Det oppbevares et rikt arkiv etter Erling Gjone ved Universitetsbiblioteket i Trondheim, NTNU.
