Stereoskopisk fotografi er basert på det prinsipp at om to fotografier av et motiv er tatt fra to punkter som svarer til øyeavstanden, så vil de to bildene oppfattes som et tilnærmet tredimensjonalt bilde, om de betraktes på en slik måte at øynene ser hvert sitt bilde av motivet. Prinsippet ble først forklart av den engelske fysiker Sir Charles Wheatstone i 1832.
Verascope, et kamera spesielt konstruert for stereoskopiske arbeider, ble først annonsert t i september 1894, og produsert av Jules Richard i Paris. Det var basert på et patent som ble gitt til Jules Richard i England 19. mai 1893. Det var fortsatt i salg helt inn i 1930- årene, bare med små endringer i design. Noe som bidro til popularitet var et "system" av tilbehør og framvisere som kunne kjøpes i tillegg.
