Japanske Toshiba ble den første store utfordreren med suksess på datamaskinmarkedet, dominert av amerikanske produsenter. Laptopene fra Toshiba var blant de første bærbare datamaskiner for et massemarked. Modellen T1200 kom i 1987, og hadde Intel 80C86 prosessor, harddisk og diskettstasjon. Den var også den første bærbare datamaskin med utskiftbar batteripakke, slik at det kunne være flere batterier i reserve ved behov.
The Japanese company Toshiba became the first major challenger to succeed in a computer market dominated by American manufacturers. Toshiba laptops were among the first portable computers designed for a mass market. This model, the T1200, was released in 1987, and had an Intel 80C86 processor, hard drive and disk drive. It was also the first laptop with a replaceable battery pack, so that you could have more batteries ready for use.
