Text in English: The sculpture group consists of four lion figures.
Location on the ship
Their original location on the ship has not yet been determined, although the likely location is somwhere on the aftercatle.
Iconography
The small lion figure is reminiscent of a playing lion and should be regarded as a decorative element in the decoration of the ship. It is less likely that the lion sculptures should be interpreted in a symbolic way. At this time small statuettes of playing lions appear just as ornamentation in exterior house decoration in northern Europe. The engraving by Sigismund van Vogel, (1640), of the Makalös palace in Stockholm, shows small, decorative lions in profile upon the balustrades of the ground and first floors of the palace. The palace, built for Field Marshall Jacob de la Gardie and now demolished, was an equal to the Vasa in the principles of its figurative and ornamental decoration.
Woodcarver unknown.
