Text in English:
A sculpture in the shape of a baluster, sumptuously decorated with figures, fruit and foliage.
The baluster appears to be the only remaining piece of a balustrade most likely located furthest forward across the upper deck. The number of missing balusters is uncertain. Similar balustrades located on the upper deck may be found on contemporary ships.
The sculpture was found outside the Vasa, near the bow. Traces of gold leaf were still visible when it was brought up.
Location on the ship
The sculpture is located furthest forward on the upper deck.
Iconography
The sculpture is a typical example of the further development in the Northern European manneristic style of the Vitruvian motif of caryatids and Persians towards the caryatid-herm. This was employed freely by Vredeman de Vries, Krammer, Cornelis Floris and above all by Cornelis Bos, among others, from whose edition of the grotesques the sculpture may have derived. The small masks on the pedestal, the exuberant clusters of fruit, and the motif of arms crossed on the breasts of the herm and the caryatid can all be traced back to Bos. The last motif occurs frequently in his work, and the formal similarities between the figure here and two female herms on the judges'' bench in the town hall in Kampen, Holland, are notable; they where carved just before the middle of the sixteenth century and are derived from Bos'' work.
Woodcarver is probably Johann Thesson.
