Text in English: Sculpture designed as a Herm for the port main tack.
There were originally two sculptures; one located to the port and one to the starboard. The counterpart on the starboard side has never been found.
Location on ship
The sculpture is located on the upper part of the ship''s side to port, between the fifth and sixth gunport from the bow.
Function
The sculpture fulfils a practical technical function as a detail of the rigging. Placed a little forward of midships on the outside planking on the port side, it received through its big hole the port main tack from the main sail, by means of which (together with the main sheet) the sail could be trimmed to the wind. On the engraving of the French ship Saint Louis by Hondius 1626, a Herm having the same function as the above sculpture may be seen between the third and fourth ports of the gun-deck.
Iconography
The animal head that covers the head of the Herm, although somewhat diffuse in its construction, may be identified as that of a lion, since the purpose of this would be to give the Herm some of the lion''s attributes of strength and tenacity, the iconographical origin and symbolism can be derived from the Hercules myth, alluding to the lion skin Hercules wore, to symbolize his strength and courage.
Woodcarver unknown.
