Lejonmaskaron.
I bildkonsten symboliserar lejonet bl.a. styrka och dödande kraft.

Text in English: Part of a lion mask. Originally there been 54 lion masks.
EJ ÖVERSATT: Lejonmaskaronens ursprungliga fyndnummer saknas, varför uppgifter rörande fyndplats, fynddatum e.t.c. ej har gått att finna. Maskaronen har omregistrerats av konserveringsenheten.
Location on ship
The lion masks has embellished the ship''''s square gunports. The gunports are located LÄNGS MED LÅNGSIDORNA on the upper gundeck (24 gunports), the lower gundeck (28 gunports) and on the aftercastle (2 gunports). The masks are replaced on the basis of the divers'''' statements in connection with the masks'''' recovery, men exakta ursprungliga placeringar har ej kunnat fastställas.
Iconography
The choice of the faces of lions as embellishments of gunports was thus psychologically justified and in accordance with contemporary beliefs concerning pictorial or sculptured images. The magical-symbolic function of Vasa''''s sculptures is particularly evident and easily understood here. In art, the lion stands, among much else, for strength and lethal power; their position over the gunports which, when opened, revealed the protruding muzzles of the guns, meant that the masks formed a symbol of the devastating striking power that the ship represented through its weapons. It must also be borne in mind that lion masks of this kind are a frequent decorative element in renaissance and baroque architecture, so that the psychological and symbolic motives for their choice should not be exaggerated to the extent of ignoring their values as straightforwardly decorative elements.
Woodcarver
Two types of mask are to be seen among the material. EJ ÖVERSATT: Vilken stiltyp som tillhör lejonmaskaron 23875 har ej fastställts p.g.a. maskaronens slitage. It could probably belongs to a type which is characterised by forms that are mobile and naturalistic, with a small mane. Woodcarver for this type of mask is unknown. The other type of mask is characterised by forms that are stylized in a somewhat manneristic way but which are still elegantly carved and with fringes of the manes that are powerful. This type of mask has numerous details in common with the faces of the lions supporting the national coat-of-arms; it is therefore reasonable to suggest that DET RÖR SIG OM SAMME BILDSNIDARE, NÄMLIGEN MÅRTEN REDTMER.
Original colouring
The masks original colouring has been confirmed by analysis of samples from surviving traces on the masks. These analysis show that the masks were given a brownish-yellow nuance, with white eyes and teeth, and red inside of their mouths. The reason that the masks were not gilded but painted in natural colours is probably due to the desire to give them as natural an appearance as possible. Furthermore, the brownish-yellow masks were outlined against gunport lids painted red.
