I 2003 publiserte sivilarkitekt Elin Mortensen ved Fetsund lenser denne artikkelen i tidsskriftet «Årringen»:
«Soppemaskinene ved Fetsund Lenser.
I tømmerfløtingen ble mye energi brukt på å fløte tømmer over innsjøer og stillestående vann. Når tømmeret kom til en innsjø med lite strøm måtte det derfor bygges lenseanlegg der tømmeret ble buntet og samlet for å bli slept over sjøen. Ved lenseanleggene ble også en del tømmer sortert ut og fløtet til lokale sagbruk.
Til å begynne med ble alt tømmeret samlet og buntet for hånd. I Fetsund samlet man tømmeret i «flak». Det finnes fotografier av flakene, og en opptelling viser at de største kunne inneholde fem lag tømmer á 24 stokker, samt et øverste lag med 12 stokker som var vendt på tvers. Tømmer som var buntet maskinelt hadde stokker som vendte samme vei. Her ble det brukt betegnelsen «sopper» eller «moser».
Soppeapparatet blir oppfunnet
Etter hvert som tømmermengden tiltok, tok det selvsagt lang tid å bunte tømmeret for hånd. I 1876 oppfant lensebestyrer ved Furuholmen lenser i Østfold, R. C. Furuholmen, den første maskinen eller soppeapparatet, som kunne bunte tømmeret maskinelt. Prinsippet bygde på at tømmeret ble lagt i kryss, oppå hverandre, og at hvert lag inneholdt 28 stokker. Første og andre lag ble krysslagt samme plass, deretter ble flåten vendt 90 grader og et siste lag ble anlagt vinkelrett på de to. Nedenfor Øyeren var «sopper» med andre ord betegnelsen på krysslagt tømmer som var buntet maskinelt og lå oppå hverandre.
Tømmermengden fortsatte å tilta, og i 1884 ble maskinen erstattet av en ny, som kunne svinge 90 grader slik at soppen ble liggende på plass til den var ferdig. Apparatet kunne også soppe flere lag tømmer enn det gamle. På Hvidsten lense hadde man fra 1885 hydraulisk akkumulatordrift der maskinen kunne soppe ni lag med tømmer. Enda et soppeapparat av samme type ble oppfunnet i 1895 av R. C. Furuholmens sønn Gun. Furuholmen. I 1901 utviklet Arnt Svartedal soppeapparatet som ble brukt av Glomma fellesfløtingsforening frem til fløtingen opphørte i 1985.
Arnt Svartedals soppeapparat
Maskinen Arnt Svartedal oppfant var annerledes enn de forrige, og bygde på at tømmeret ble ført inn i apparatet på tvers av strømretningen. To innbyrdes forbundne pongtonger på 60 meters lengde dannet kjørebane for en bevegelig bro som var forsynt med tre sverd. I starten var sverdene hevet og tømmeret ble fløtet inn i maskinen. Så ble sverdene senket og tømmeret presset mot en fast bro som også var forsynt med sverd. En vaier ble lagt om tømmeret, sverdene på den faste broen ble hevet og soppen kunne kjøres ut av maskinen. I 1901 talte ei soppe 300 stokker, men til sist da tømmerdimensjonen var mindre var det 500 stokker i en bunt.
I begynnelsen ble Arnt Svartedals soppeapparat brukt på Furuholmen som et supplement til de to andre. Ved alle nye lenseanlegg på den tida ble Arnt Svartedals apparat valgt. Det samme gjaldt for Fetsund lenser (1905) og Lillehammer lense (1909).
Soppeapparater ved Fetsund lenser
I 1898-99 ble det bygd nytt lenseanlegg ved Fetsund. Det omfattet også et soppeapparat av typen R. C. Furuholmen hadde oppfunnet. Det var meningen at apparatet skulle brukes til å flake Lillehammertømmeret, men det ble ingen suksess da arbeidet to for lang tid til tross for at arbeidsstokken ble økt. Dessuten var apparatet plassert ved sorteringsrennen midt i elva, og ble til hinder for det øvrige arbeidet ved anlegget.
Et dampdrevet soppeapparat av tre ble tatt i bruk i 1905. Samtidig ble det slutt på å føre tømmer i bom over Øyeren. I 1907 gikk lensene over til elektrisk drift, og det ble bygd to nye apparater av tre, samt et av stål. I alt var det nå fire soppeapparater i drift ved Fetsund lenser, tre som var elektrisk drevet, og et som var dampdrevet.
Elanlegget til drift av soppemaskinene sto i det «Gamle verkstedet». Det ble trukket av en lokomobil, som i mai 1907 ble levert av Hamar Jernstøperi. Det dampdrevne kraftanlegg på 55 HK var i drift ved lensene fra 1907 til 1929. Da gikk man over til å benytte kraft fra Akershus Elektrisitetsverk. Maskinen ved Leirtangen var i 1905 dampdrevet, men det året ble det montert en ny 30 HK elektrisk motor som ble drevet med strøm fra Fet elverk.
I 1911 ble apparatet fra 1905 kassert og erstattet med et av stål. Frem til 1916 ble apparatene som hadde trekonstruksjon erstattet av jernkonstruksjon. De fire soppeapparatene var i drift til 1966, men etter nedleggingen av anlegget på vestsiden av Glomma var bare to i drift frem til 1985.
På Fetsund lenser er det i dag bevart to soppeapparatet fra 1907 og 1911. Apparatet fra 1911 ble i 1993-2003 restaurerte og kan sees i lenseanlegget ved Blikkomøya.»

«Maskinfører og trallemann (ca. 1900-1985)
For å betjene selve soppemaskinen [buntemaskinen] trengtes det to til tre mann. Foruten maskinføreren, som kjørte bruene fra sitt maskinhus, var det også en eller to mann på tralla. Tralla var navnet på den bevegelige brua på maskinen. Som nevnt tidligere var trallemannens oppgave å vippe ned de tre sverdene når tømmeret skulle presses sammen til ei soppe. Trallemannen måtte også binde soppa sammen med vaier. Når dette var gjort, måtte han åpne utløseren for sverdene på den faste brua, slik at soppa kunne slippes ut i vendinga. Trallemannen rettet også tømmeret som kom feil inn i soppemaskinen.» Maskinføreren måtte ha god utsikt over hele soppekammeret. Vinsjen som dro tralla mot den faste brua ble startet, stanset og returnert ved hjelp av en dreibar bryter. Blokken som lå på bordet ved sida av maskinføreren kan tyde på at han telte soppene etter hvert som de ble ekspedert.
I begynnelsen av 1980-åra ble det klart at det gikk mot slutten med tømmerfløtinga i Glomma. Derfor fikk historikeren Øivind Vestheim, som ble ansatt som amanuensis ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i 1984, dokumentasjon av denne virksomheten som en av sine primæroppgaver. Vestheim gjorde mange reiser langs vassdraget, der han snakket med fløtere og dokumenterte ved hjelp av notatblokk og diktafon. Han hadde også med seg museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad på flere av turene. Vestheims dokumentasjonsarbeid dreide seg også om de materielle levningene etter fløtingsvirksomheten som snart skulle opphøre. Han ble blant annet sentral i første fase av bevaringa av Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiver ved Fetsund lenser. Arkivet ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det ligge på Fetsund, hvor Vestheim sammen med lokale engasjementsmedarbeidere foretok en første ordning. Den daglige forvaltningen av Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv er seinere overlatt til fløtermuseet ved Fetsund lenser. I 1985 omtalte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum Vestheims arbeid som «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette siste driftsåret til Glomma fellesfløtingsforening dokumenterte Vestheim og Ljøstad fløting i Åmot i Østerdalen, ved Norsfossen i Solør, ved Bingen og på Øyeren i Akershus, og ved Sleppetangen, Solbergfoss, Vamma, Glennetangen og Eidet i Østfold. For å få gode oversiktsbilder av lensesystemer og tømmersleping leide museet fly. Sluttproduktet fra Vestheims arbeid med Glomma-fløtinga ble boka «Fløting gjennom århundrer – fløtingas historie i Glomma- og Mjøsvassdraget», som ble utgitt som Norsk Skogbruksmuseums særpublikasjon nr. 13 i 1998.
