Bodø Hovedflystasjon var i nær 70 år en av NATOs viktigste flybaser i Nord-Europa.
I kjølvannet av Korea-krigen vokste det fram en sterk bekymring for en sovjetisk invasjon av Vest-Europa. Styrkingen av forsvaret av Nord-Norge ble en hastesak.
Bodø ble valgt fordi byen lå utenfor en direkte rekkevidde for de sovjetiske styrkene.
Flyplassen ble i hovedsak finansiert av NATO. Anleggsarbeidet tok til i juni 1951 og allerede samme høst lå en 1 000 meter lang rullebane ferdig. Høsten 1952 ble de sivile flyrutene åpnet. I 1955 var det meste av infrastruktur på plass og de første skvadronene ble overført til stasjonen. Den ble etter hvert hjem for en rekke skvadroner, luftvernartilleri i tillegg til beredskapsflyene som i vel 60 år voktet NATOs nordflanke.
På grunn av stadige nye behov, ble den militære flystasjonen i Bodø ble først offisielt ferdigstilt i 1993.
