Glennetangen lense ble bygd etter et vedtak som ble gjort av styret i det nyetablerte Glomma fellesfløtingsforening i 1936, like etter sammenslutningen av Christiania Tømmerdirektion og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion. Vedtaket ble gjort fordi ledelsen i den nye organisasjonen var smertelig klar over at effektiviteten ved Nes lense, som hadde vært i drift siden 1908, og som lå noen kilometer høyere oppe i elva, aldri kunne bli helt optimal. Ved Nes var det problemer med strøm, og i perioder også med vind. Reguleringstiltakene som fulgte stadig flere kraftverksdammer i nedre Glomma førte dessuten til at fløtingsarbeidet i denne delen av vassdraget måtte forseres i perioder da kraftverkene så seg råd til å slippe mye vann forbi dammene, noe som skapte kapasitetsproblemer ved Nes-lensa. Undersøkelser hadde vist at både strøm- og vindforhold var bedre på strekningen Glennetangen – Finnskott. Flyttinga av et slikt stort lenseanlegg var imidlertid en kostbar affære, som tømmerkjøperne ikke torde gi seg i kast med før de to gamle fellesfløtingsforeningene i vassdraget var slått sammen til én. Vedtaket om å bygge et nyanlegg ble altså gjort i 1936. Arbeidet med å bygge den nye lensa ved Glennetangen begynte året etter, og anlegget sto ferdig til bruk i 1938. Glennetangen lense gjennomgikk en større ombygging tidlig i 1960-åra, og anlegget var i bruk inntil fløtinga i vassdraget ble avviklet i midten av 1980-åra. Mot slutten var Borregaard fabrikker den eneste bedriften som fikk tømmer via vassdraget, så da ble det mindre sorteringsarbeid, men naturligvis mye sopping (bunting) med sikte på tømmersleping i det østre elveløpet. Lenseanlegget på Glennetangen fikk ei kraftig oppsamlings- eller beholdningslense, som startet ved Lystadtangen i Skiptvet på vestsida og ved Finnskott i Rakkestad på østsida. Nederst i beholdningslensa ble tømmeret sluppet inn i sorteringslensa gjennom to såkalte ”søkker”. Nedenfor ble det fordelt på fem avdelinger, som endte i hver sin mosemaskin. På vegen mot disse maskinene ble tømmeret sortert etter påslåtte øksemerker i ”lommer”. Når disse var fulle ble virke fra samme lomme (med samme merke) ble sluppet samlet ned til mosing. Før ombygginga tidlig i 1960-åra var sorteringsanlegget om lag 2 000 meter langt og hadde 120 båser. Etterpå ble anlegget forkortet til cirka 1 100 meter og antallet båser ble redusert til 42. Denne endringa speilte både strukturelle endringer i tømmermarkedet (færre, men større bedrifter kjøpte tømmeret) og i den tilgjengelige teknologien.

Dette var flytende stengsler som skulle holde seg rette sjøl om de ble utsatt for stort trykk, og som i mange tilfeller også skulle bære gangbaner som kunne tjene som arbeidsplattformer for fløterne. I dette tilfellet var lenseelementene bygd som rammer med tre-fire omfar med tømmer, avstivet med innvendige skråband i cirka 45 graders vinkel. Her ble komponentene bygd på isen vinterstid, men så snart isen smeltet ble de til flytende komponenter som kunne kjedes sammen i det som var i ferd med å bli et nytt sorterings- og moseanlegg (bunting av tømmer).
Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Museet satte historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad til å følge fløtinga i vassdraget med kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløting om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten fløtinga hadde vært. En del installasjoner i vassdrag måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noe ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for protokoll- og dokumentarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum da fløtinga opphørte. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. OT Ljøstad reproduserte en del av motivene ved hjelp av mellomformatkamera med negativ svart-hvitt-film. Materialet ble også enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført. Norsk Skogbruksmuseum publiserte i 1998 Øivind Vestheims bok «Fløtning gjennom århundrer» hvor mye av materialet fra «Prosjekt Glomma» og fotografier fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv ble presentert.
Other informationJohs. Johannesen ble født i Oslo 16. mai 1877. Han tok artium i 1895, og tre år seinere ble han uteksaminert som bygningsingeniør fra Kristiania tekniske skole. Deretter var han ansatt ved Gleim og Eyde i Lübeck, seinere ved Eydes ingeniørkontor i Kristiania. I perioden 1900-01 studerte han ved den tekniske høgskolen i Dresden. I 1902 ble han fløtingsinspektør i Glomma-vassdraget, og fire år seinere ble han utnevnt til direktør i Christiania Tømmerdirektion, seinere kalt Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening. Denne stillingen hadde han fram til våren 1948, da han nådde aldersgrensen. Johannesen var ofte medlem av ulike tekniske kommisjoner, både i og utenfor fløtingsvesenet. Han skal blant annet ha høstet anerkjennelse for den innsatsen han gjorde i grenseforhandlinger med Russland. Johannesen var medlem av hovedstyret i Norsk Ingeniørforening fra 1925 til 1933, og i de tre siste åra av denne perioden var han styreleder med tittelen "president". Johs.
