Norsk Skogmuseum har nærkontakt med Glomma, i og med at det opprinnelige friluftsmuseet ligger på Prestøya med Prestfossen på den ene sida og Klokkerfossen på den andre, mens museets hovedbygg og en nyere del av friluftsmuseet ligger på klokkergarden Fossum, ved elvas østre bredd. Beliggenheten er idyllisk og ideell for et museum som har skog- og utmarksnæringer som tematikk, og som er en av hovedaktørene i NVSs museumsordning, med egen utstillingspark langs elvebredden. Beliggenheten medfører imidlertid også en viss risiko i år med store flommer i vassdraget. 1995 var et flomår av det sjeldne. På flomsteinen ved Klokkerfossbrua, som har vannstandsmerker for storflommer fra 1675 og framover, er det bare den såkalte «Stor-Ofsen» i 1789 som rager høyere. 1995-flommen har følgelig i ettertid vært kalt «Vesle-Ofsen». Snøsmeltinga dette året kom for alvor med en varmeperiode som førte til at vannstanden steg og steg utover i andre halvdel av mai og kulminerte om kvelden 2. juni 1995. Vannmassene truet både museumsbygningen, som etter en utbygging tidlig i 1990-åra lå med vestfløyen eksponert mot elva, og friluftsmuseet på Prestøya. Flommen førte til at det ble behov for sikringstiltak, både mellom Glommas østre elvebredd og museumsbygningen, og på Prestøya. For å sikre museumsbygningen leide man anleggsmaskiner som ble brukt til å legge opp en stor flomvoll som skjerm mot elva. Vollen ble plastret mot elveleiet ved hjelp av glassfiberduk og sandsekker. Samtidig fikk man stengt dreneringsrør og avløpsledninger, som kunne ført til at elvevannet rant mot bygningen om vannstanden i elva oversteg golvnivået i underetasjen. Innvendige sluk i underetasjen ble også tettet. Materiale som sto på golvene i magasinene ble løftet, i tilfelle de nevnte tiltakene ikke skulle være tilstrekkelige. På Prestøya ble de første husene berørt av flomvannet 1. juni 1995. Med bistand fra entreprenørselskapet Martin M. Bakken ble bygningene bardunert med steinblokker og trær som festepunkter, først med vaiere og kjettinger, seinere med stropper med strammemekanismer. Jølsternaustet, som er en lett, panelkledd stavkonstruksjon, ble befridd for kledning, slik at strømmen ikke skulle skylle med seg bygningen. Da flommen kulminerte var tre firedeler av øya dekt av vann. Flere av bygningene ble påført skader. Både under Jølsternaustet og Varåkoia ble mye masse skylt vekk, noe som naturligvis ble en belastning på de delene av konstruksjonene som ble hengende i løse lufta. Den kraftige vannstømmen brøt også gjennom flomvollen mot Prestfossen. Dermed strømmet det enorme vannmengder mot fløtingskanalen bak denne vollen, og vannet ble stående så høyt at både Kvannstranddamkoia og redskapshuset fra Gammelbudammen fløt opp og fløt opp og drev vekk fra fundamentene. Det samme skjedde med fiskeklekkeriet fra Femundsenden på motsatt side av øya. Vannmassene skylte også med seg gangveger og trær, men la også igjen store mengder drivgods fra ovenforliggende områder. Skadene påførte museet skader som ble taksert til 2,5 millioner 1995-kroner. Disse kostnadene ble dels dekt av museets forsikringsselskap, dels av Naturskadefondet og dels av en ekstrabevilgning fra Kulturdepartementet. NVE bisto med gjenoppbygging av den ødelagte flomvollen. To handverkere med spesialkompetanse innenfor antikvarisk registrering ble innleid for å sette i stand igjen de tre bygningene som ble mest skadde av vannmassene. Arbeidet med å få satt friluftsmuseet på Prestøya i presentabel stand igjen la beslag på mesteparten av museets handverker- og vaktmesterkapasitet et halvt års tid etter flommen.

Da dette fotografiet ble tatt var to av museets vaktmestre i ferd med å spenne en kjetting over mønet på naustet fra Breisjøen i Alvdal (SJF-B.0011). Ove Jarne Østby sto på taket, mens Kjell Magne Kaveldiget forsøkte å feste kjettingen på bakken. Som naust er dette huset rimelig nok plassert forholdsvis lavt i terrenget, men likevel et godt stykke fra den vanlige elvebredden. De store vannstandsvariasjonene i vassdraget innebærer likevel at Breisjønaustet er en av de første bygningene som berøres av flom. Kommer det mye vann, er det en viss fare for at bygningen løftes fra fundamentene og driver vekk. Det var dette man forsøkte å forebygge ved spenne en kjetting over husets møne med steiner på marka som forankringspunkter. Fotografiet viser også at karene la 2’X4’ under kjettingen ved mønet for å forebygge gnisseskader på taktekkinga. Erfaringer viste etter hvert at det var bedre å forankre bygningene med lastestropper med strammeinnretning enn å bruke kjettinger eller vaiere.
