Odda høgre skole (ungdomsskolen) vart bygd i 1958, med offisiell innviing 17. januar 1959. Samstundes kunne skulen feira 40-års jubileum. Det nye skulebygget vart betalt av kommunen sine eigne midlar, som så mange av nybygga på den tida. Arkitekt for skulebygget var Halfdan Bratt Grieg (1925-2001) frå Bergen. Han teikna fleire sentrale bygg i Bergen og dreiv arkitektfirmaet Grieg Arkitekter fram til 1987. Halfdan B. Grieg var sønn av arkitekt Per Geelmuyden Grieg (1897-1962).
Høgare ålmennskular var skular som hadde både middelskule (realskule frå 1935) og gymnas. Dei var stort sett kommunale. I 1964 skilde realskulen og gymnaset lag. Realskulen blei til ungdomsskulen, som ein del av den niårige grunnskulen. Gymnasa fortsette som sjølvstendige skular drive av fylkeskommunane. Då Odda Gymnas flytta inn i nytt bygg på Eidesmoen hausten 1969, vart framhaldsskulen og realskulen avvikla, og tre års ungdomsskule var obligatorisk for alle.
