Ferskvannsbiologen Hartvig Huitfeldt-Kaas (1867-1941) skrev blant annet dette om notfisket etter lågåsild i den nedre delen av Gudbrandsdalslågen, basert på observasjoner han sjøl gjorde tidlig på 1900-tallet:
«Det i Laagen drevne notfiske adskiller sig ogsaa i flere henseende meget fra det foran beskrevne nede i Mjøsen, idet elvevarpene med sin ringere størrelse ikke gir plads for saa store nøter som varpene paa Vingerum, likesom deres beliggenhet langs efter elveleiet i forbindelse med strømmens styrke medfører at notkastene maa gjøres langs med land – nedover strømmen – og ikke som nede i Mjøsen tvers paa land. Paa denne maate blir notkastene forholdsvis korte og kan utføres i løpet av relativt kort tid, saa et stort antal kast kan gjøres om dagen. Til gjengjæld er fangstutbyttet i hvert kast dog sedvanligvis gjennemgaaende mindre. Undertiden kan dog ogsaa her tages meget betydelige kvanta i et kast. Det største fangstutbytte som man vet er gjort i Laagen i et kast er 19 tønder, hvilket blev gjort paa Sandvarpet paa Trosset i 1913.
… Under sildens opgang i «Strømmen» vil man ikke sjelden se den gaa og spilde i overflaten. Fiskerne holder derfor godt øie med enhver bevægelse i vandflaten, som kan antages at være foraarsaget av fisk. Tror man at se et par spillende sild, blir noten øieblikkelig kastet ut, - ti hvor et par sild sees i overflaten, kan der ofte gaa tusenvis dypere nede i vandet – men ikke altid lykkes kastet, her som nede ved Mjøsen om sommeren svømmer den nemlig av sted med en kolossal hurtighet til en saa liten fisk at være, og det ikke altid ret imot strømmen.»
SubjectTo fiskere i en robåt, ei åfløy, ved Lortvarpet i Fåberg, altså i Gudbrandsdalslågens nedre del. Fotografiet er tatt en grå oktoberdag i 1976, med sludd i lufta. Karene var i ferd med å innlede et notkast etter lågåsild (Coregonus albula). Åfløya var en lokal båttype, som flatbotnet, bred og kraftig kuvet i lengderetningen og et sterkt utfallende akterparti («plitten»). Nota var et bundet, finmasket innstengingsredskap. Den hadde kraftig tauverk øverst og nederst, henholdsvis «flætennol» og «søkketennol», som var utstyrt med henholdsvis flyteelementer og søkker. Dermed ble det finmaskete garnet – «bundingen» – stående som en vegg i vannmassene. I begge endene av bundingen var det tau, som ble brukt når nota skulle dras mot land. Her var brødrene Martin og Sæming Søreng klare til å foreta et notkast. Martin var «sættar». Han satt ved årene og skulle ro båten i ei bue ut i elveløpet og deretter inn mot land igjen. Broren Sæming var «bøler» og skulle kaste fangstredskapen i vatnet. Da bildet ble tatt hadde karene i båten overlatt enden av «stillpinntauet» til en eller flere karer på land, og bøleren sto oppreist i båten, klar til å begynne å kaste sjølve notveven i vatnet. Lengre nede ved elvebredden sto en eller flere karer klare til å ta imot «åfløytauget» eller «innreiingstauget». Ved Lortvarpet skal begge tauene ha vært om lag 150 meter lange.
