Hartvig Huitfeldt-Kaas (1867-1941) skrev følgende om lågåsildnøtene og bruken av dem i Vingrom, der dette fotografiet ble tatt i 1901 (fra «Mjøsens fisker og fiskerier» [1917], side 48-50):
«Den sildenot som almindelig brukes paa Vingerum er sedvanlig ca. 100 alen (62,8 m.) lang. Den sammensættes av 12 a 13 deler: «teiner», som hver er i alen (ca. 5 m.) lang, hvorved hele notens længde altsaa blir 96-104 alen (ca. 60-65,3 m.). Dybden er på midten 12-16 Alen (ca. 7,53-10,05 m.), alm. 14 alen (ca. 8,8 m.) paa enderne blot 7 alen (ca. 4,40 m.). Maskevidden er paa midten ca. 13-14 mm. og paa enderne ca. 16,7-17,2 mm. (resp. 46-48 og 36-40 omfar p. al.).
For at notens undertelne skal gli let henover ujevnheter paa bunden og særlig for at den ikke skal skjære sig ned i lerbunden er der fastsydd til den et ca. 5 cm. tykt, flettet taggeltaug.
Under dragningen av noten anvendes sedvanlig 80-100 favner lange græstaug, hvortil er fæstet trækavler eller smaa tønder – 2 paa hver side – for at lette trækningen og hindre taugets og undertelnens nedskjæring i lerbunden.
Under alt fiske paa Vingerum og ogsaa i Laagen brukes den paa disse steder almindelig benyttede flatbundede baatform «aafløien». Efter at noten er kastet ut, hvilket altid sker fra nord mot syd af hensyn til strømmen, og fiskerne har tat sig en kort hvil «for at noten skal synke godt tilbunds», begynder det langvarige og trættende arbeide med at dra den ind, som frembyr lutet av interesse saa længe noten avancerer smaat ute paa den dype lerbund, men som følges med spændt opmerksomhet at tilskere og fiskerne selv, saasnart den begynder at nærme sig land og de første korker dukker op over vandflaten.
Jeg vil her gaa over til at gi en skildring av sildefisket paa Vingerum saadan som det pleier være paa en av de gode fiskedager … [Her følger en beskrivelse av forfatterens opplevelser på Risestranda 13. oktober 1901. Vi fortsetter med hans beskrivelse av det som skjedde når nota begynte å nærme seg land:]
… Flere og flere korker paa noten dukker op, og spændingen er stadig stigende. Først naar de aller sidste korker er oppe, kan man opgjøre sig nogen formening om hvad der er i noten. Endelig er hele overtelnen i vandskorpen og nu ser vi et stykke utenfor notenden fuldt av smaa luftblærer pible op. Da vet vi at der er fisk i noten, og det mange ogsaa, for det formelig fosser bakom den av luftblærer. Paa den ene side forsvinder ret som det er korkene under vandflaten snart paa et sted, snart paa et andet. Der maa altsaa være en større fisk med ogsaa, for silden kan ikke gjøre saa store spræl, enten maa det være en gjedde eller en lake, eller kanske en ørret paa nedgang fra Laagen.
Mere og mere av noten drages forsigtig ind med undertelnen trukket stramt efter binden, saa ingen fisk kan faa smøget sig under. Enkelte silde begynder nu at følge med de indtukne armer av noten, men med et ryk slænges de ut igjen i det av nottrækningen opgrumsede vand. Flere og flere sild blir det, saa norarmene maa hæves høit i veiret for at fiskene kan bli drevet ut i den yderste ende av noten. Tusenvis av blanke sild spiller og plasker saa det kan høres lang vei.
Tilslut blir al silden samlet i enden av noten, idet 2 mand holder den tilveirs i 4 hjørner, saa fisken blir liggende som i en sæk, mens en tredie begynder at øse den op med en bøtte og bærer den op i kasserne som staar i beredskap paa stranden ovenfor. ….»
Den 5. januar 1963 skrev Ringsaker blad dette om betegnelsene på Coregonus albula - «lagesild» og «lågåsild»:
«Lagesild – lågåsild
For en tid siden spurte en av våre lesere, Gunvor Gjølstad, om avisen kunne gi noen forklaring på hva som er riktig: lagesild eller lågåsild. Hun har merket seg at formen lågåsild ble brukt i et fjernsynsprogram.
Lagesild er den vanlige formen i bokmålsordlister og i leksikon. Men Lillehammer-avisene bruker konsekvent formen lågåsild, som er i samsvar med dialekten i Lillehammer og i bygdene omkring. Aschehougs leksikon gir følgende forklaring på navnet: Lagesild (egentlig lagarsild, genitiv av gamalnorsk logr. Lågen). Hvis en er oppmerksom på at fiskenavnet kommer av elvenavnet Lågen, må en vel kunne si at lågåsild er en vel så riktig form som lagesild. Lagarsild brukes vel neppe i moderne norsk.»
SubjectNotfiske etter lågåsild (Coregonus albula) på Risestranda i Fåberg høsten 1979. På dette fotografiet ser vi hvordan nota roes ut fra land i en diger bue. Fiskerne var arbeidskledde, med lange forklær i vannavstøtende materiale. Risestranda var ett av om lag seksti lågåsildvarp i nordenen av Mjøsa. Med et par unntak lå alle på vestsida, mellom Vingnes og Vingrom. Her var bunnforholdene nokså ensartete, og notfisket foregikk følgelig på noenlunde samme måte fra varp til varp, i motsetning til høyere oppe i Lågen, der vekslende elvetopografi og strømforhold var årsaker til variasjoner i måtene det ble fisket på. Her, ved nordenden av Mjøsa, betydde mannskapsmengden man greide å mobilisere til å delta i notfisket noe for hvordan det ble gjort. Prosessen startet da nota skulle legges i båten. To fiskere la nota på plass i akterenden («plitten») av åfløya. Den ene bar undertelna («søkketennolen»), den andre bar overtelna («flætennolen»). I noen tilfeller la de nota i det åpne rommet mellom roeren og plitten. I slike tilfeller måtte det være to menn i båten – en som rodde og en som kastet nota i vannet akterut. Var notlaget fåtallig, hendte det at redskapen ble lagt på en liten plattform over plitten. Derfra kunne nota langsomt skli ned i vannet mens en mann rodde langsomt i en bueform ut på vannet med åfløytauet var forankret inne på land. Det er en slik situasjon vi ser på dette bildet. Langs Vingromlandet kunne lågåsildstimene gå både nordover og sørover, og dette notkastbuene ble tilpasset vekslende vandringsretninger. Etter at nota var satt, lot fiskerne den synke, slik at den finmaskete nettveven stod som en vegg i vannet. Deretter startet inndrainga ved at tauene i endene av notveven ble trukket langsomt inn mot land. Ettersom redskapen nærmet seg land, kunne fiskerne observere luftbobler – «auger» – i vannflata, og mengden av slike gav et inntrykk av hvor stor fangst de kunne vente seg. Når nota begynte å nærme seg strandsonen var det behov for fire personer til å dra, to i hver sin ende av flætennolen og to i hver sin ende av søkketennolen. De to sistnevnte sto forholdsvis nær hverandre, i midten og helt nede i strandsonen, for det var viktig at lågåsilda ikke skulle innslippe på undersida av nota. Da hele søkketennolen var berget i land samlet man fisken i den «bakre» delen av notveven. Herfra kunne fangsten overføres til fiskekasser, eller den kunne midlertidig samles i «steng» - flytende rammer med en nettpose under. Hvert notkast i dette området tok cirka en time. I begynnelsen av sesongen, da sildestimene kom sporadisk, satt fiskerne og ventet på vak som indikerte om det var grunn til å kaste nota. Når lågåsildas gytevandring var på sitt mest intense, var det bare tid til korte pauser mellom hvert notkast.
