Den gamle folkeskolen på Nesna
Der dagens administrasjonsbygg står på Nesna var det tidligere et stort skolebygg. Huset var i mange år stedets folkeskole, bygd i 1886.
I 1880 fikk Nesna ny kirke. Det gamle tømmeret ble brukt til ny skole. Den nye skolen ble bygd på nabotomta til den gamle skolen "Klokkergården" som var blitt altfor liten og umoderne. Nyskolen var høy og bred, i to fulle etasjer med stort loft og kjeller og et utbygg foran som var inngang. Huset hadde tre vinduer på kortsidene i hver etasje, og på langsiden var det fem. Takutspringet hadde utskjæringer. Bygningen hadde liggende panel, noe som var nokså uvanlig i området. Vinduene sto tett sammen, var høye og slapp inn mye lys, typisk for skoler bygd på slutten av 1800-tallet. I 1886, samme år som den nye skolen på Nesna ble bygd, kom et nytt sentralt rundskriv om skolebygninger. Det la vekt på lys og luft. Så var også skolen et moderne bygg for sin tid. Den var satt opp med tanke på framtida. Til å begynne med var skoleundervisningen todelt i en småskoleklasse og en storskoleklasse. Rundt 1930 ble det behov for deling på sju trinn, seinere ble det ni.
Også arealet rundt skolen bar preg av at dette var et undervisningsbygg, med blant annet skolehage og lekeplass. Det ble i tillegg plantet trær for å gjøre arealet hyggelig. Lekeplassen var innrammet av løvtrær.
Det nye skolebygget ble ikke bare brukt til folkeskoleundervisning. Rundt 1900 hadde Nesna noen år med amtskole. Undervisninga foregikk i folkeskolen fra 1894 til 1903. Da flyttet amtskolen til Hemnes. Da lærerskolen ble grunnlaget i 1918, uten eget hus til å begynne med, fikk også lærerskoleelevene undervisning i lokalene til folkeskolen fram til nybygg i 1921.
I 1957 ble det bygd ny folkeskole på Nesna et stykke unna skolen fra 1886. 71 år er en anselig tid for et skolebygg og det gamle huset var utslitt og lite tidsriktig. Fra da av disponerte Ytre Helgeland Realskole de tilårskomne lokalene, med opptil fire klasser samtidig. Sommeren 1971 var det slutt. Johannes Lovund skriver i fotefarheftet for Nesna: "Sommeren 1971 forlot det siste realskolekullet den ærverdige skolebygningen. To år etter betalte kommunen 6000 kr for å få huset fjernet. Det ble enden for den staselige bygningen som hadde stått i kulturens tjeneste i 85 år." En periode fungerte tomta som campingplass, før kommunens administrasjonshus ble bygd i 1987.
