Mobiltelefoner utviklet seg med stadig flere ulike funksjoner og innbakte teknologier. Kameramobilen ble først lansert av Sharp og Samsung i 2000, da digitalkamerateknologien var blitt moden nok og liten nok til å kunne integreres i mobiltelefoner. Det var Samsung som ledet an i dette, men de fleste andre mobiltelefonprodusenter fulgte etter.
Utfordringen var å kombinere nok prosessorkraft, god nok bildebrikke og god nok optikk til å kunne selge mobilkamera som en fullgod erstatter for digitalkamera. Særlig optikken var en utfordring, og med denne hybrid-modellen av Galaxy S4 forsøkte Samsung å lage en ekte kombinasjon av digitalkamera med stor optikk med optisk zoom på den ene siden, og en helt vanlig mobiltelefon Samsung Galaxy S4 på den andre.
Resultatet ble verken fugl eller fisk - selv om optikken ga et langt bedre mobilkamera enn konkurrerende smarttelefoner på samme tid, gjorde den klumpete optikk-delen som nødvendigvis måtte bli en del av designet, at det ble en uhåndterlig mobiltelefon som ikke så spesielt elegant ut eller lot seg putte i en lomme. Kritikere innvendte at det verken var et godt digitalkamera eller en god mobiltelefon.
Utviklingen av mobilkamerateknologien med kombinasjoner av flere små objektiver, bedre prosessorer og bildebrikker sørget raskt for at slike hybrid-løsninger forsvant fra markedet.
