    The Land-Wheelwright Laboratories ble tablert i 1932 av Edwin Herbert Land (1909-1991) og George Wheelwright. Firmaet produserte Lands første oppfinnelse, et rimelig plastikkark for lyspolarisering.
    
    I 1936 begynte Land å benytte polarisert materiale i solbriller og andre optiske enheter. Året etter skiftet firmaet navn til Polaroid.
