Perimeteret har vært brukt av øyelege Egill Hansen med praksis i Akersg 31. Han mottok apparatet fra Martman Moe i 1997.
For å definere yttergrensene nøyaktig slik at synsfeltet kan tegnes ned, bruker man gjerne et halvkuleperimeter. Da undersøker man yttergrensene av synsfeltet når pasienten har det ene øyet i kulesentrum og ser på et fast punkt. Ved å vise objekter av forskjellig størrelse, farge og intensitet, kan man kartlegge yttergrensene for hvert objekt. Hvert objekt får dermed sin såkalte isopter, som godt kan sammenliknes med høydekurver på et kart.
Ved undersøkelse av synsfeltene vil yttergrensene for store objekter ved perimetri være ca. 60 grader oppover og mot nesesiden.
På tinningsiden vil synsfeltet gå ut til 80-90 grader og noe mindre nedover. Mellom 12 og 18 grader har vi en blind flekk som svarer til størrelsen på selve synsnerven der den kommer inn i øyet. Grunnen til at vi normalt har en blind flekk, er at det ikke finnes sanseceller på selve synsnerven.
Vi tegner synsfeltene slik som vi ser dem - høyre øye til høyre og venstre øye til venstre.
Det finnes meget avansert utstyr med dataprogrammer for å gjøre synsfeltsundersøkelser. Felles for alle teknikker er at selve undersøkelsessituasjonen bør være så lik som mulig fra gang til gang.
