I 1893 ledet Fridtjof Nansen en ekspedisjon mot Nordpolen. De skulle drive over polpunktet innefrosset i isen med skuta FRAM, men drev lenger mot syd enn Nansen hadde regnet med. Fridtjof Nansen og Hjalmar Johansen forlot polarskuta og gikk mot Nordpolen med ski, hunder, sleder og kajakker. På grunn av kulde, matmangel og vanskelige isforhold måtte de snu ved 86°14' i april 1895.
De overvintret på Franz Josef Land, og møtte ved en tilfeldighet en engelsk ekspedisjon som tok dem med tilbake til Norge. Her ble de gjenforent med resten av mannskapet om bord på FRAM, ledet av kaptein Otto Sverdrup under Nansens fravær.
Aksesjon: 1897 - 1911 ("I 1912 fikk samlingen en verdifull tilvekst da Roald Amundsen ga løfte om det skiutstyr han og hans feller hadde brukt på Sydpolferden.
