• Dear Curators,

I'm working on a modification of a videogame which features the Second Northern War (1655–1660), where players fight personally on the battlefields (first person shooting and fencing). I was able to gather sources for the good portrayal of Swedish soldiers but it's hard to find info related their proper swords. The original game used Thirty Years War period hilts.

Some books, for example Svenska blankvapen del II might have the information needed but I don't speak Swedish.

Your museum is a good source of pictures and you probably have the knowledge to help me to give the Swedish soldiers their proper sword types.

    Mysteries to solve:

-Were there separate types for cavalry and infantry like in later centuries? The measurements of 5 surviving examples I know differ only in 2,5cm (78,5-81cm blade length) which is not much difference. In the description you wrote it's a cavalry sword which implies there must be an infantry sword as well.

-Your sword in this category has a blackened hilt. Is it known which type of troops got blackened hilts? For example certain regiments or even marines? Other examples aren't blackened.

-What's the weight of this sword? This piece is 1.43 kg which is quite heavy. Is there any difference in the surviving examples of this type? I suppose there are more of these in storage. Weight is not just a statistical data, we will set its usage based on weight.

-Is M/1653 considered a sword type officially? I saw it here. I'm just asking because you don't use it on any swords.

-Is it known the amount issued of the type 1653? I suppose older pieces were preserved and still used to save money.

    Best Regards,

    Zoltán Csatádi
