Båten vart funnen i Haukomvatnet av ein tysk turist, Knuth Kirsten, sommaren 1984. Han tok han på land og brukte han som blomekasse. Torkell Fjermedal frå Iveland og Vegusdal bygdemuseum fekk greie på det, og reiste for å sjå på båten, saman med kona Magnhild, og leiaren i museumslaget, Sigurd Belland. Fylkeskonservator Kirsten Hellerdal vart kontakta, og ho varsla Universitetets oldsakssamling.
Seinare same sommaren fann Knuth Kirsten to båtar til Haukomvatnet (IV. 1726 og 1727)
Per Oscar Nybruget frå oldsakssamlinga kom og tok dateringsprøver av alle tre båtane.
IV. 1725 og 1727 vart liggjande på land og tørke, og vart frakta til Iveland og Vegusdal bygdemuseum utan konservering.
IV. 1726 var gjennom ein konserveringsprosess som tok 5 år, og vart utstilt 31.08.1999.
