- I 1888 startet presten Thomas Oliver arbeidet med å fremstille en skrivemaskin. Egentlig skulle han bare bygge et eksemplar for å bruke den selv, men i 1892 fikk han patent på den første maskinen. Det ble dannet et selskap som skulle utnytte patentet. den første maskinen som ble solgt gikk også til en prest. I motsetning til de fleste andre skrivemaskinfirmaer hadde Oliver Typewriter Company (Oliver selv deltok ikke aktivt) så stor pågang fra kunder at de hadde problemer med å skaffe nok maskiner så å si helt fra begynnelsen. Fra 1895 til 1907 måtte firmaet flytte inn i nye og større bygninger hvert annet år, til tross for at de hver gang utvidet med tanke på fremtiden. En av grunnene til at maskinen ble så populær var bl.a. at den hadde synlig skrift og at den var lett å skrive på. Dessuten var det en solid maskin som tålte mange års bruk.
