Industrireisinga i Odda og Tyssedal føregjekk i stort tempo frå 1906 og framover. Bustadmangel melde seg, og ordninga Egne hjem vart ei av løysingane. Omgrepet Egne hjem vart kjend i Norge i 1902, etter at tidsskriftet "Egne Hjem" byrja å koma ut. I Sverige hadde "Egnahemrörelsen" etablert seg på slutten av 1800-talet. Dei første husa i Norge etter Egne hjem-prinsippet vart bygd i Bærum, med oppstart i 1900. Ein typisk Egne hjem-bustad kan beskrivast som eit lite hus med eit tilhøyrande jordstykke av ein slik storleik at det kunne brukast til å dyrka hagevekstar og jordbruksprodukt til arbeidarfamilien sin eigen bruk. Huset skulle liggja i landlege omgjevnader, og ikkje vera større enn at ein arbeidarfamilie ville ha råd til å eiga det. Husbygginga på Tveite vart sett i gang i 1912, og var ferdig i 1916. I 1927 vart det bygd fleire hus med fire leilegheiter på to eller tre rom og kjøken. Her delte to familiar eit bad med vedfyrt varmtvasskjele i kjellaren. Berre eit fåtal av husa på Egne Hjem var privateigde. I 1924 vart eigedomsselskapet overteke av A/S Odda nye Eiendomskompani som var AS Tyssefaldene sitt eigedomsselskap. Frå same tid disponerte Det Norske Zinkkompani A/S eigedomane på Egne Hjem. Frå 1981 til 1988 selde Norzink alle husa sine til private. Først etter denne tid kan bustadfeltet på Tveite bera namnet sitt med rette.
