Kalkstein, som er det viktigste råmaterial til produksjon av kalsiumkarbid, ble fra oppstart i 1908 brent til kalk i 5 kalkovner av Fanehjelms konstruksjon for indirekte fyring. Kalksteinen som brukes til karbidproduksjon består av ca. 98% kalsiumkarbonat (CaCO3). Ved oppvarming i kalkovn til ca. 1000 °C spaltes kalsiumkarbonat til kalk (CaO) og CO2. Kalk og tørket koks blandes i rett forhold og mates inn på karbidovn.
Albys tidligere kalksteinsbrudd Skaftå og Mosterhamn ble kjøpt av Odda Smelteverk i desember 1924 sammen med Albys tidligere kalksteinslekter “Sørfjorden”. Skaftåbruddet ble satt i drift og dekket Oddas kalksteinsbehov helt fram til 1960. Fra ca. år 1938 måtte kalksteinsbrytingen på Skaftå etter hvert foregå i dypet, og Mosterhamn kalksteinsbrudd var i full drift som dagbrudd. Fra tid til annen var kalksteinsgangen på Skaftå isprengt mye gråstein og smalnet faretruende av. Det var tydelig at forekomsten ikke ville kunne møte Oddas behov lengre enn et begrenset antall år. På Mosterhamn nådde sjaktsynken det planlagte dyp på 50 meter, og herfra var det meningen å drive strossebryting når heise- og andre anlegg i dagen ble ferdig. I 1955 begynte brytingen omsider fra bunnen av sjakten, men det viste seg at kalksteinsforekomsten var så oppblandet med tilfeldige gråbergpartier at en måtte ta håndskeiding i bruk. Dette var uforholdsmessig dyrt, samtidig som den stein som ble sendt til Odda skapte problemer for bedriften. Kalksteinsbruddet ble derfor nedlagt 1. januar 1956, og anlegg og rettighetene der måtte selges billig. 1958/59 ble et godt år, med rikelig kraft og stor produksjon for karbidfabrikken. Men kalksteinsproblemene økte. Kvantum kalkstein fra Skaftå ble mindre for hvert år, og det var nå helt klart at det bare var et spørsmål om få år før forekomsten ville være uttømt. Bedriften besluttet derfor at bruddet skulle legges ned fra juli 1961. Det hadde da vært kontinuerlig forsyning til Odda siden 1908. Av de alternativer som nå forelå for framtidig kalksteinsforsyning var det to som pekte seg ut. Enten å bryte ut i egen regi i Skreppåsenfeltet, hvor diamantboringer hadde gitt lovende resultater, eller å kjøpe utenfra. Skreppåsen måtte sjaltes ut bl.a. fordi de nødvendige investeringer ville overstige selskapets økonomiske evne. Bedriften festet seg da ved mulige leveringer under langsiktige kontrakter fra et stort dagbrudd i det nordlige Wales. Stein herfra hadde med godt resultat vært prøvd ved drift i Odda. Bruddet eides av firmaet William Robertson Shipowners Ltd i Glasgow, som også hadde en flåte av passende skip for kalksteinstransporten. Firmaet kunne derfor tilby kalksteinen på meget tilfredsstillende vilkår levert ved kai Odda. Forhandlingene med dette firma førte til en langtidskontrakt som ble effektiv fra 1.juli 1960. Årskvantum kalkstein var i flere år oppe i 200.000 tonn. Kontraktsrettigheter m.m. til Skreppåsen ble derfor solgt til Hafslund.
Den siste kalksteinslasten fra Skaftå kom til Odda i mai 1961. I de neste 30 år ble så godt som all kalkstein til Odda Smelteverk levert fra Nord-Wales. Etter hvert begynte bedriften å se seg om etter andre konkurransedyktige leverandører. En av disse var Tilcon Ltd. I Yorkshire, England. Fra Gotland ble det også tatt inn en del prøvepartier, det samme fra Skreppåsen i Verdal. De siste driftsårene ved Odda Smelteverk ble det tatt inn betydelige kvanta kalkstein fra Frankrike.Odda, 13.03.11
