Portrett av forstmannen Karl Heinrich Edmund von Berg (1800-1874). Det dreier seg om en litografisk gjengivelse av et fotografi, som viser nevnte von Berg, kledd i frakk med dress med vest, kvit skjorte og tversoversløyfe under. Han er avbildet sittende på en stol med høyre hånd mot hofta og venstre hånd på venstre kne. Han hadde grålig helskjegg og bakoverstrøket hår ved ørene og på bakhodet. Fotografiet som ligger til grunn for dette bildet er åpenbart tatt i et studio.
Forstmannen Karl Heinrich Edmund von Berg var født i Göttingen i det tyske landskapet Niedersachsen i 1800. Som evnerik sønn av en jusprofessor som gjorde karriere som embetsmann og politisk fikk han god utdanning. Alt som 15-åring hadde han tatt artium, og kunne begynne på forstakademiet i Dreissigacker. Deretter fulgte naturfaglige og juridiske studier ved universitetet i fødebyen. I 1820 fikk han et embete i den offentlige bergsverks- og skogadministrasjonen i Clausthal, hvor han også underviste i skogøkologi og jaktkunnskap ved en nyetablert skogskole. Fra 1830 var han «Oberförster» i regionen. Femten år seinere, i 1845, etterfulgte von Berg da avdøde Heinrich Cotta som rektor ved det velrenommerte forstakademiet i Tharandt i Sachsen. De tyske statene hadde en ledende stilling på dette fagfeltet på 1800-tallet, og også en hel del utenlandsstudenter søkte seg til Tharandt. Også mange av pionerene i det skogfalige miljøet i Norge studerte i Tharandt, hvor de blant annet satt under von Bergs kateter. Han reiste også på forstlige studieturer til mange av landene studentene hans kom fra, blant annet til Norge. Han markerte seg som motstander av reine barskoger, blant annet fordi han mente at blandingsskoger gav bedre sikkerhet mot storm- og insektskader enn monokulturer av gran, furu eller lerk. Von Berg skrev lærebøker i skogbruk og kolbrenning, men også skog- og jakthistoriske bøker. Han ledet forstakademiet i Tharand fram til 1866. Von Berg døde i Schandau i 1874.

Dette er ett av flere innrammete portretter som lenge prydet veggene i kontorene til den seksjonen i det skogbruksfaglige miljøet ved Norges landbrukshøgskole/Universitetet for biovitenskap på Ås i Akershus. Førsteamanuensis Lars Helge Frivold holdt sin siste forelesning 15. februar 2012, og overlot da kontoret sitt til en etterfølger som ikke hadde det samme forholdet til de skogakasdemiske gründerskikkelsene som han hadde hatt sjøl. Etter å ha spurt etterfølgeren og en del yngre kolleger om de ønsket å overta portrettsamlinga og fått negative svar på dette, bestemte han seg for å overlate bildene til Norsk Skogmuseum. Bjørn Bækkelund fra museet overvar Frivolds avskjedsforelesning, og fikk bildene med tilbake til Elverum etter denne begivenheten. Kapasitetsutfordringer i museet førte til at det gikk to år før samlinga ble registrert. Bildene ble registrert som gjenstander fordi museet fra før har en del kontormøbler etter et par kjente skogfunksjonærer. Portrettsamlinga kan derfor tenkes brukt på veggene i et eventuelt rekonstruert kontormiljø. Motivene har også en verdi som portretter av sentrale forstmenn. Mange av dem vil derfor også bli registrert i museets fotodatabase.
