«Jaktens og fiskets dag» ble arrangert på Norsk Skogbruksmuseum første gang sommeren 1963. Det året hadde Elverum en stor reiselivsutstilling. Temaet var aktuelt, for i etterkrigsåra fikk folk mer fritid og bedre økonomi. Med mer penger mellom hendene og mer tid som kunne disponeres til noe annet enn arbeid, ble det stadig mer aktuelt å dra på tur. Reiselivsutstillingen i Elverum i 1963 skulle fokusere på mulighetene for fritidsopplevelser i denne delen av Glommadalføret, og at utstillingen ble avviklet på Glomdalsmuseet var naturlig. Dette museet hadde fasiliteter og erfaring med store friluftsarrangementer sommerstid. Daværende Norsk Skogbruksmuseum hadde også kontorer på Glomdalsmuseet, og friluftsmuseet på Prestøya hadde bare en noenlunde komfortabel adkomst, nemlig via hengebrua fra Glomdalsmuseet. Også Skogbruksmuseet ble bedt om å bidra til reiselivsutstillingen i 1963. Den unge konservatoren Tore Fossum tok utfordringen og organiserte noe han kalte «jaktens og fiskets dag». Han mobiliserte venner i jakthund- og skyttermiljøet og veteraner fra innlandsfiskeværet ved Sølensjøen i Rendalen til å bistå med formidlingsaktiviteter på Prestøya. Tiltaket ble en suksess. Året etter – i 1964 – markerte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum sitt tiårsjubileum med et liknende arrangement, nå med base på Klokkergarden på denne sida av elva og med ny bru ut til friluftsmuseet på Prestøya. I åra som fulgte ble «jaktens- og fiskets dag» en fast post på årsprogrammet. Tida omkring 1970 ble ei brytningstid for Norsk Skogbruksmuseum. Det var da man endelig fikk en egen museumsbygning med plass for utstillinger og magasiner, noe som bidro til at stadig flere besøkte museet, året rundt. Den økte interessen preget også det store sommerarrangementet på museet. Det kom stadig flere folk til jaktens og fiskets dag, og ikke alle aktører og gjester snakket lenger østerdøl, solung eller hedmarking. Det begynte å dukke opp folk fra nabolandene. Ettersom en stadig større del av publikum fikk lørdagsfri ble arrangementet utvidet, i første omgang til to dager. Dette var noe av bakgrunnen for at Tore Fossum og samarbeidspartnerne hans fra begynnelsen av 1970-åra begynte å kalle arrangementet De nordiske jakt- og fiskedager. I slutten av dette tiåret kom ferskvannsbiologen Christian Andersen til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum. Han skulle bidra til å realisere idéen om å få bygd et akvarium som skulle vise fiskelivet i ulike typer vassdrag, fra fjell til fjære. Dette preget hans første arbeidsår på museet. Etter at akvariet var ferdig var Christian først og fremst opptatt av å få folk til å komme for å se akvariet og alt det andre museet hadde å tilby. De nordiske jakt- og fiskedager ble etter hvert en hovedoppgave for Christian Andersen og kona Kari, som var en dyktig sekretær og administrator. Under Kari og Christian Andersens engasjerte og dyktige ledelse vokste arrangementet kraftig utover i 1980- og 90-åra. Fra årtusenskiftet overtok Lene Faraasen hovedansvaret for arrangementet, og fra og med 2013 gikk Stein Tore Andersen inn i denne rollen. Siden 1991 har jakt- og fiskedagene vært et firedagers arrangement, vanligvis med drøyt 30 000 besøkende. I 2014 var det 52. gang Norsk Skogmuseum hadde et stort sommerarrangement med jakt og fiske som hovedtema.

Museumsbygningene, to sammenbygde blokker på 40 X 40 meter, utført i betong med teglsteinsforblending, ligger litt til høyre for bildeflatas midtpunkt. På museets parkeringsplasser og på Nordjordet (arealet mellom museets nordgrense, Solørvegen og Glomma) samt på søndre del av Prestegardsjordet, skimter vi store mengder parkerte biler. Sør for museumsbygningene, på det som en gang var åkrene på klokkergarden Fossum, ser vi utstillertelt og en masse mennesker. Til venstre i forgrunnen ligger Prestøya, der Norsk Skogmuseum har sitt friluftsmuseum. Den dagen dette fotografiet ble tatt var det jakthundutstilling med bortimot 700 påmeldte hunder på øya, men på grunn av skogen ser vi ikke denne eller andre aktiviteter på øya på fotografiet. Sentralt i bildet ser vi Glomma, som delser seg i Klokkerfossen på østsida av Prestøya og Prestfossen på den nordvestre sida. Nord for Prestfossen ligger Glomdalsmuseet og bakenfor skimter vi bydelen Vestad. På østsida av elva ser vi Elverum sentrum, også kalt Leiret. I bakgrunnen skimter vi Strandbygda med omliggende, skogkledde åser.
Den dagen dette fotografiet ble tatt var det 13 148 gjester som løste billetter til De nordiske jakt- og fiskedager. I løpet av de fire dagene arrangementet pågikk var det 31 919 mennesker som besøkte museet.
