I Norsk knivforenings medlemsblad, «Knivbladet», nr. 4 fra 1988, har UIf Lie og Per Thoresen skrevet følgende artikkel om Magne Groven (1925-1999):
«Magne Groven, Vinje.
Ingen andre knivtyper slår stasknivene fra Telemark. Det er kniver som har alt, både i funksjon og form, i materialer og utførelse, i godt håndverk og kunstnerisk utfoldelse i alle detaljer. Hvis en knivsamling skulle bestå av bare en eneste kniv (fæl tanke?), måtte det bli en slik en (og på de neste plassene er gjerstadkniv og en samekniv). Men så kommer jo spørsmålet: Hvilken staskniv fra Telemark? Da blir det verre. Det er heldigvis en del å velge mellom i førstedivisjonen. En som i alle fall ville blitt med i sluttspillet, er Magne Groven i Vinje.
Bakgrunn
Magne Groven ble født på gården Groven i Gøytilgrenda i Ytre Vinje i 1925. Faren var handelsmannen og felespilleren Olav Groven. Magne og kona Hildegunn Ringhus Groven bor i Åmot.
Magne har en gild kniv som har tilhørt faren. Bjørn Kleppo laget den i midten av 20-åra, men senere kom den ut av slekta. Magne fikk tak i kniven på Dyrsku’n i Seljord i 1981. På den øvre slireholken har Kleppo på en mesterlig måte fått flettet inn initialene O.G. i graveringa i sølvet.
Magne begynte å skjære ut trefigurer allerede som barn. Det ble små fugler og andre dyr. Han viste tidlig en sikker formsans, den kom senere til nytte i formgiving av kniver. Tinnarbeid har han også syslet med. Også etter at han begynte med kniver, har han laget andre saker. Det ble graverte sølvarmbånd en tid. Og han har gravert munnspillene til Sigmund Groven og Tommy Reilly.
Starten
Knivene kom ikke før i 1972 (den gang kunne en få en staskniv av de beste knivmakerne for 500 kroner). Da skjedde noe som fikk stor betydning for knivkunsten i Telemark; Arne Martin Solbjør holdt kurs i Åmot, to kurs i Seljord og to i Åmotsdal. Disse kursene fikk ringvirkninger, for flere av deltakerne ble etter hvert dyktige knivmakere som i sin tur holdt kurs. Magne Groven var en av deltakerne på kurset i Åmot.
Magne laget kniver i et par-tre år før han hadde lyst til å vise dem fram. Først i 1975 leverte han en kniv til vurdering på Dalsmarken. Denne fikk han annenpremie for. Siden har det blitt førstepremier, både på Dalsmarken, Dyrsku’n og Handelsstevnet i Skien. (I år stilte sønnen Helge ut kniv for første gang, også han på Dalsmarken. Han fikk annenpremie …)
Slike plasseringer fører til stor etterspørsel, og det har vært vanskelig å holde tritt med bestillingene. Mange glemmer at det er i fritida han har laget kniver, om dagen har han arbeidet i postverket, der han var fra 1964 til 1987, da leddgikta ble for ille.
Landpostbud
Arbeidet som landpostbud har hatt betydning for knivarbeidet. På postruta var det flere dyktige knivmakere, for dette var jo midt i tjukkeste kniv-Norge. Ikke alle var like lette å komme inn på og få lære av, det var ikke bare å møte opp for å bli undervist. Men Magne hadde jo alle tiders grunn til å komme stadig vekk.
En av de helt store knivmakerne, Gunnar Omdal, var en av postkundene. Han og broren Nils drev gården Øvre Mjaugedal. Det var Nils som var sjefen, og det var han som førte ordet. Magne forteller om en gang han hadde fått Gunnar til å tegne et monogram – Gunnar var så dyktig til å få til monogrammer med gotiske bokstaver. Da så Magne spurte hva han skulle ha for jobben, var det Nils som svarte: Nei, det var helt gratis, det var så lite at det var ikke noe å ta noe for.
Magne fikk mye hjelp og tips av Gunnar.Der fikk han også satt opp stikler og geifuser før han fikk det til skikkelig selv. Knivene hans viser påvirkningen fra Gunnar Omdal. Enda større innflytelse på knivene hans har nok Bjørn Kleppo.
Karakteristiske trekk
Magnes kniver er lette å kjenne igjen. Det utmerker seg med god form, og han er en usedvanlig dyktig sjåfør. Knivene hans har harmoniske proporsjoner, han har arbeidet med å få dem slankere og få bort det litt klumpete preget som mange av forbildene har. Knivene er også en tanke mindre enn mange av disse. Han lager for øvrig mange størrelser. Skaftene er ikke så runde i tverrsnitt som mange andre staskniver. Flere knivmakere bruker Magnes modeller som forbilde for sine egne.
Magne er både kunstneren og den dyktige håndverkeren. Graveringene hans er friske og kraftfulle som få andes, han er ikke den som forsiktig pirker mønsteret fram, engstelig for at det skal bli en liten feil et sted.
Det er staskniver han lager, noen helt enkle brukskniver har han ikke. Han begynte ganske tidlig med krokkniver. I 1983 kom han med en ny modell med en nisse på toppen. Nissen kom fra en gammel knapp.
Skal det være riktig stas, lager han en og annen kniv med gullholker. Gull er ikke bare kostbart, det er også hardt å arbeide. Og så er det en annen ting: Folk tror det er messing! På knivtreff på Elverum for et par år siden var det en som fortalte at Magne Groven graverer så fabelaktig bra i messing. Det hadde ikke falt han inn at det kunne være et annet metall.
Han har brukt blader fra mange av smedene i Telemark, fra Eivind Hovden, Sigurd Dauvi, Einar Sperre og flere. Noen få har han også smidd selv, en av gullknivene har signaturen MG på bladet.
Samleobjekt
Magne Groven er kanskje den mest kjente av stasknivmakerne i Telemark. Han har en selvfølgelig plass i mange knivsamlinger, og knivene hans blir brukt til gaver når det skal tas hardt i. Da kronprins Harald fylte femti, var en av gavene en Magne Groven-kniv. Da Husfliden skulle gi en gave til kronprinsesse Sonja, var også det en Groven-kniv.
Han har vært intervjuet og omtalt i aviser og blader mange ganger, i Telemark Arbeiderblad, i Vi Menn, i Alle Menn. Og i Kapital ble knivene hans betegnet som meget bra investeringer.
For en knivmaker er det selvfølgelig morsomt at produktene blir vurdert som samleverdige, men enda morsommere er det å se dem der de egentlig hører hjemme, i beltet til en fornøyd knivbruker. Magne Groven hører til de som kan gå på knivtreff og få øye på kniver han selv har laget, der de henger på buksebakene som det mest selvfølgelige av verden.
Leddgikta har plaga ham mye siden den kom i 1984. I det siste har han fått satt inn et nytt ledd i den ene armen, og snart skal det samme skje med den andre. Slikt er ikke det beste som kan skje en gravør. Den karakteristiske, kraftfulle graveringa koster store anstrengelser å få til nå, den som gikk så tilsynelatende lekende lett før.
Fortsettelsen
Sønnen, Helge Rikard (født i 1959) bruker farens verksted, farens modeller og farens dekor. Han begynte å sy slirer i 1980, og laget sin første sølvkniv i 1982-1983 (gravert av faren) og har gravert selv siden 1984. Eldstesønnen Olav samler på kniver, men lager ikke selv.»
