Hydrostatiske vekter demonsterer Arkimedes lov om at et legeme nedsunket i væske blir holdt oppe av en kraft tilsvarende vekten av den fortrengte væsken. De blir også brukt til å veie legemer i luft og så i vann, for derved å bestemme deres spesifikke vekt.
Thomas Blunt (1760-1823) var lærling hos Edward Nairne (1726-1806) og ble hans partner rundt 1774. Partnerskapet ble oppløst i 1794 da Blunt startet for seg selv. Forretningen ble senere overtatt av Thomas Harris. Nairne og Blunt var blant de best kjente instrumentmakerene i sin tid.
