Text in English: Mermaid, one of two similar sculptures, included in a sculpture group comprising eight decorative sculptures. With the exception of the mermaids, these differ widely from one another in type and appearance.
The sculpture is a counterpart to No. 05546. The two sculptures depicting mermaids have evidently formed a pair, for they are mirror images of one another. The straight-cut lower edge indicates that they have formed part of a larger decorative composition, probably on an item of furniture of some sort.
Site context
All the sculptures, with the exception of No. 04821, were recovered aft on the upper gun deck, in the main cabin.
Location and function on ship.
The sculptures have probably been located in the main cabin, or the smaller cabin above the main cabin, situated on the aft part of the upper deck. Because they are few in number, it is possible that the sculptures decorated furniture or other movable items in the cabin, and were not part of any fixed decoration.
Woodcarver unknown. The two small sculptures were evidently made by the same artist and, to judge from the shape of their faces, by Johann Thesson, the woodcarver who made the Vasa coat of arms on the stern castle and the "child orchestra" in the steerage.
