  • The painting can be dated to between 1884 and August 1889. Captain J.G.Albrechtsen was her master during this time period. She was a 454 ton wooden barque built in Laurvig in 1874 by N.Pedersen. She measured 133 feet in length by 31.8 feet in breadth and had a depth of hold of 16 feet. When she was lost in August 1889 she was owned by M.Oppen of Laurvig.

  • Thank you for your very informative comment. According to our records the painting is dated 1889, which seems to correspond with your suggestion of 1884 to 1889. I will add the ships information to the post.

  • The view in the background under the barque's bowsprit is the South Stack, Anglesey, North Wales. This is a well known landmark for ships inward bound for Liverpool

  • Hi Charles. Thank you for your follow up. I added the information on the location to the post yesterday. Unfortunatly information on locations doesn't get published automatically for museum objects like this painting, but we will be able to see it when we access the post here at the museum. I will look into the posibility of this information being visible on DigitaltMuseum as well.
