«Overgangen fra naturalhusholdning til pengehusholdning kommer tydelig til syne i måten skogsarbeiderne skaffet seg klær på. Fram til et stykke etter århundreskriftet kan en si at hovedparten av arbeidsklærne ble tilvirket i hjemmene eller av lokale håndverkere, men etter at konfeksjons- og skotøyindustrien fikk sine produkter ut på markedet, ble en stadig større del av påkledningen kjøpt.
Dette er hovedtendensen, men bildet blir mye mer nyansert hvis en ser på hvordan den enkelte husholdningen ordnet sin forsyning av klær. Et eksempel er ekteparet Bergny [1904-1996] og Halvor Bratteggen [1900-1977] fra Trysil. Halvor drev som tømmerkjører i perioden 1920-70, og hans kone lagde så å si alt han trengte av arbeidsklær og finklær, og dette gjaldt vel og merke helt fram til 70-åra. En så stor grad av sjølforsyning er ikke typisk så langt fram i tida, men eksempelet viser godt hvilke deler av påkledningen som lot seg tilvirke i hjemmene, og det kan også gi inntrykk av hvordan det var vanlig for de fleste å skaffe seg klær lenger tilbake i tida.
Bratteggens var småbrukere, og dette har vært ganske vanlig for skogsarbeiderfamilier. Spesielt tømmerkjøring passet godt i kombinasjon med småbruksdrift, fordi en da kunne utnytte hestene hele året. Skogsarbeidet ga kanskje størsteparten av kontantinntektene, mens småbruket produserte en stor del av livets nødvendigheter.
Småbruksdriften hadde betydning for en families anledning til å produsere sine klær hjemme. Bratteggens holdt sauer og geiter, og kunne dermed holde seg sjøl med ull og ragg, og også ku- og hestehår kunne i enkelte tilfelle utnyttes. Bergny spant ullgarnet som trengtes til veving og strikking, og til sokkegarn ble ull og ragg spunnet sammen. Det tregtes også mye bomullsgarn, og dette måtte selvfølgelig kjøpes.
Bergny vevde mesteparten av tøyet sjøl, og tidligere var det vanlig at det sto vevstoler i de fleste hjem. Hun forteller: «Det var vanlig at folk vevde sjøl. De vevde alt de trengte, både til klær, sengetøy og håndklær. Det var lite penger å kjøpe for, så de vevde alt som skulle være i huset.»

Den kunne brukes til felling, kvisting og barking, men etter det øvrige utstyret vi ser på fotografiet å dømme, var det vel helst bare kvistinga som skulle utføres ved hjelp av øks i dette tilfellet. Til høyre for skogsarbeideren ser vi nemlig en navar, en barkespade, en skant og en svans. Svansen var ei handsag som ble brukt til felling og kapping, barkespaden ble som betegnelsen antyder brukt til barking, men skanten var en hjemmelagd målestav med halvmetermål, som ble brukt når stokkene skulle kappes i salgbare lengder. Det T-formete navarboret ble brukt til å lage hull i endene på tømmer som skulle hankekjøres – kjedes sammen i endene og trekkes på snøen fram til fløtingsvassdrag. Skogsarbeideren Kåre Bratteggen var kledd i mørke vadmelsbukser der leggene var beskyttet av snøsokker av lær. På overkroppen hadde han en lys busserull i halvull, og på hodet ei skyggelue av bomullsstoff.
Dette fotografiet er tatt i forbindelse med en undersøkelse om skogsarbeiderklær som vitenskapelig assistent Geir Hovensjø ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum gjorde i 1970-åra. Undersøkelsen ble publisert i artikkelform i museets årbok nr. 8 (1976-77). Hovensjø hadde også intervjuet Kåre Bratteggens svigerinne, Bergny Bratteggen. En tekstsekvens fra artikkelen som beskriver hjemmetilvirkninga av arbeidsklær i denne familien er gjengitt under fanen «Opplysninger».
Dette fotografiet er ble tatt av museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad i forbindelse med at daværende vitenskapelig assistent ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum, Geir Hovensjø, samlet inn skogsarbeiderklær og gjorde intervjuer om klestradisjoner i ulike skogsbygder, særlig i Trysil og i Namdalen. I forbindelse med dette prosjektet skrev for øvrig Hovensjø atrikkelen «Skogsarbeiderklær» i museets årbok nummer 8 (1976-77). Det er grunn til å tro at dette fotografiet var ett av mange som ble tatt med henblikk på denne publikasjonen, men ikke brukt. Hovensjøs artikel var i mange år pensum for grunnfagsstudentene i etnologi, der den skilte seg litt ut fra det øvrige «draktpensumet», som var påfallende festdrakts- og bunadsorientert.
