De Nordiske jakt- og fiskedager var det 52. store sommerarrangementet med jakt, fiske og friluftsliv som tema på Norsk Skogmuseum. Det startet sommeren 1963. Det året hadde Elverum en stor reiselivsutstilling, og museet bidro med et program som ble kalt «jaktens og fiskets dag» der en del av museets støttespillere i jakthund- og skyttermiljøet og veteraner fra innlandsfiskeværet ved Sølensjøen i Rendalen gjennomførte en del interessante aktiviteter i friluftsmuseet på Prestøya. Året etter feiret museet sitt 10-årsjubileum med liknende program. Disse arrangementene hadde betydelig publikumsappell, så museet fortsatte med en «jaktens- og fiskets dag» hver sommer. I begynnelsen av 1970-åra begynte man å strekke arrangementet over flere dager, og navnet ble samtidig endret til «De nordiske jakt- og fiskedager». Jakt- og fiskedagene samler både kommersielle og ideelle utstillere, og omfatter dessuten en rekke museumsaktiviteter, samt demonstrasjoner og foredrag knyttet til emner som interesserer et publikum som er interessert i friluftsliv. Arrangementet i 2014 var det 52. i rekka. Det ble arrangert i perioden fra torsdag 7. til søndag 10. august med Norges Jeger- og Fiskerforbund som hovedsamarbeidspartner. 31 919 besøkte jakt- og fiskedagene i løpet av disse fire dagene. Lørdagen, da dette fotografiet ble tatt, var den beste besøksdagen med 13 148 gjester.

I en bakkekam sør for tunet på klokkergarden Fossum har museet bygd en blesterovn på grunnlag av en beskrivelse i Ole Olsen Evenstads (1739-1806) «Afhandling om Jernmalm som findes i Myrer og Moradser i Norge, og Omgangsmaaden med at forvandle den til Jern og Staal» fra 1782. Det vi ser i forgrunnen er såkalt «røsting». Dette er en varmeprosess malmen utsettes for før den er klar for blestring. Slik Evenstad oppfattet det var røstinga en metode for å «skille Malmen fra mange vandagtige, tunge og ureene Deele, som hænge ved den». Dette ble gjort ved å samle malmen fra myra på nærmeste tørre sandmo, på et sted der lyngvegetasjonen var rensket bort. Her lagde karene en plattform av 10 alen lange tømmerstokker, som ble lagt tett inntil hverandre i to, kryssende lag. Oppå dette la de ti-tolv lass med malm, i et lag som skulle være om lag trekvart alen tjukt, men med et krater i midten som skulle sikre lufttilgang når det etter hvert skulle gjøres opp ild på røsteplassen. Varme gjorde karene opp ved å antenne tørr småved og tørrkvist som de stakk under tømmerramma som de hadde lagt malmen på. Slik fikk de altså – slik Evenstad og hans samtidige oppfattet det – renset malmen. Moderne metallurger har påpekt at rå jernmalm inneholder jernhydrat (FeOOH) og silisiumdioksid (SiO2), og at varmebehandlinga innebar at malmen ble omdannet til jern(III)oksid (Fe2O3) og dermed ble magnetisk. Samtidig ble malmvolumet redusert, slik at lettere lot seg transportere til blesterovnen, som i mange tilfeller lå et godt stykke unna myra der malmen ble funnet og den tilstøtende moen der røstinga foregikk. Norsk Skogmuseum har ikke økonomi til å utføre røsting i fullskalaformat. Derfor varmebehandles myrmalmen i stedet på ei diger jernpanne med undervarme fra et bål. Da dette fotografiet ble tatt var Kjetil Rukan i ferd med å fylle opp panna med tørket råmalm. I forgrunnen står vi tre stativer som bærer skåler med malm i ulike stadier, der mannskapet som utfører blestringa kan forklare røsteprosessen og illustrere effekten ved å stikke en magnet i den rødbrune jernoksidmassen i skåla lengst til høyre. I bakgrunnen ser vi bjørkestammene som fungerte som fjærer for belgtråkkerne, som pumpet oksygen inn i blesterovnen, hvor temperaturen mot slutten av prosessen skulle opp mot 1 200 grader (Celsius). Blesterovnen på Norsk Skogmuseum er vanligvis i drift på to av jakt- og fiskedagene samt under et temadagsopplegg som kalles «Fra malm i myra til stål i smia» i september (jernvinnetida) hvert år.
