De Nordiske jakt- og fiskedager var det 52. store sommerarrangementet med jakt, fiske og friluftsliv som tema på Norsk Skogmuseum. Det startet sommeren 1963. Det året hadde Elverum en stor reiselivsutstilling, og museet bidro med et program som ble kalt «jaktens og fiskets dag» der en del av museets støttespillere i jakthund- og skyttermiljøet og veteraner fra innlandsfiskeværet ved Sølensjøen i Rendalen gjennomførte en del interessante aktiviteter i friluftsmuseet på Prestøya. Året etter feiret museet sitt 10-årsjubileum med liknende program. Disse arrangementene hadde betydelig publikumsappell, så museet fortsatte med en «jaktens- og fiskets dag» hver sommer. I begynnelsen av 1970-åra begynte man å strekke arrangementet over flere dager, og navnet ble samtidig endret til «De nordiske jakt- og fiskedager». Jakt- og fiskedagene samler både kommersielle og ideelle utstillere, og omfatter dessuten en rekke museumsaktiviteter, samt demonstrasjoner og foredrag knyttet til emner som interesserer et publikum som er interessert i friluftsliv. Arrangementet i 2014 var det 52. i rekka. Det ble arrangert i perioden fra torsdag 7. til søndag 10. august med Norges Jeger- og Fiskerforbund som hovedsamarbeidspartner. 31 919 besøkte jakt- og fiskedagene i løpet av disse fire dagene. Lørdagen, da dette fotografiet ble tatt, var den beste besøksdagen med 13 148 gjester.
En av deltakerne i «Det 6. nordiske mesterskap i Stihl Timbersports» under De nordiske jakt- og fiskedager på Norsk Skogmuseum i 2014 fotografert idet han kappet ei skive av en forholdsvis grov tømmerstokk som var festet i et stålrør på scenen som ble brukt under konkurransen. Mannen arbeider med ei uvanlig stor, kraftig, langbladet og høveltannet handsag. Ansiktsuttrykket gjenspeiler tydelig at dette var tungt arbeid. En lagkamerat forsøkte åpenbart å lette saginga ved å spraye sagbladet med noe som skulle redusere friksjonen i sagskåret. Bildet er øyensynlig fra en slags stafettkonkurranse, for vi ser et tilsvarende kappelag og en dommer og kommentator i svart- og kvitstripete skjorte til høyre i bakgrunnen. I Stihls tømmersportskonkurranse kappes utøverne i hurtighet og presisjon ved bruk av økser, handsager og digre motorsager («Hot saw»). Sjølve konkurransen samlet 16 handplukkete kraftkarer fra Danmark, Norge og Sverige. De beste aktørene kvalifiserte seg for deltakelse i verdensmesterskapet i Insbruck i Østerrike. Konkurransene under jakt- og fiskedagene i 2014 var fordelt på fire dager: ungdomsøvelser på torsdag, lagstafett på fredag, individuelle øvelser for etablerte utøvere på lørdag og show på søndag.
«Stihl timbersports» er en internasjonal konkurranse for tømmerhoggere. Den har sitt utspring i Canada, USA og New Zeeland, der skogsarbeidere alt på 1800-tallet skal ha arrangert lokale konkurranser for å kåre den beste blant dem. Med tida ble det utviklet tester for vurdering av styrke og ferdighet i konkurranser på høyt nivå med profesjonelle aktører. I 1985 stiftet STIHL Inc. USA, i samarbeid med sportskanalen ESPN, det som ble «Stihl timbersports series», som er en konkurranseserie i USA og Europa. 2014 var det første året slike konkurranser ble avviklet i Norge. Konkurransene består av seks grener: tre med øks, to med motorsag og en med svans. Øvelsene simulerer felling av stående trær og kapping av felte trestammer. Utøverne får testet arbeidsteknikk, styrke og utholdenhet.
