Mandag 17. november 1958, fem år før dette fotografiet ble tatt, hadde Romerikes blad en reportasje skrevet under signaturen «Penn» fra arbeidsmiljøet til Adolf Vestby, der fløterformannen var med på ett av illustrasjonsfotografiene:
«100 ÅR GAMLE TØMMERSTOKKER OPP AV GLOMMA VED BINGEN
1,3 millioner stokker synketømmer tatt opp av hele vassdraget de siste 20 åra. Årsrekord 152 000 stokker.
Denne stokken må være minst hundre år gammel, sier Einar Berntsen fra Fetsund, der han sammen med Bernhard Fladen, Gudbrand Pettersen og Hagbart Severinsen er i ferd med å dra opp synketømmer fra bunnen av Glomma ved Bingen attholdslenser på Sørumsand. Berntsen og Bernhard Fladen har nettopp trukket opp en riktig sugg av en stokk, som må ha ligget temmelig langt ned i sand og gjørme.
Fire lag i arbeid
Det er fire lag som i år arbeider med heving av synketømmer verd Sørumsand. Tre av lagene består av karer fra Fetsund, det fjerde av Birger Strand, Hans Hammeren, Kåre og Peder Westby, alle fra Sørumsand.
Gamle lensetrær fra 1860
Når Berntsen med sånn skråsikkerhet kan påstå at han har fått så gammelt tømmer på «kroken», er det fordi karene samtidig fisker opp gamle lenstrær som ble kassert ved Bingen lenser i 1860. Og nettopp på disse lensetrærne kan ense hvor godt trevirket har holdt seg nede på elvebunnen gjennom sekel. Naturligvis er det temmelig svart og noe morkent i det ytterste laget – og oversmurt med sand og leire. Men like innenfor ytterlaget er det like hvitt og fint – som den gangen det lå oppi dagslyset.
Bra hus av synketømmer
Det er da heller ikke få som gjennom åras løp har bygd seg hus av slikt synketømmer – som er brakt opp. Bra hus er det blitt – og rimelige hus.
Det har gjennom åra vært vanlig praksis ute i skogsdistriktene langs Glommavassdraget at folk har gått sammen i et lag – og simpelthen kjøpt tømmeret av Glomma Fellesfløtningsforening – der det ligger på elvebunnen, forteller direktør Kaare Sparby i Fellesfløtningen til vårt blad. Ved Bingen og Fetsund lenser har vi imidlertid alltid selv sørget for opptakingen av synketømmeret, etter at vi begynte med det en gang i 20-åra da det var dårlige tider, og det gjaldt å beskjeftige folk så langt råd var.
78 000 stokker ved Bingen og Fetsund i 1954
Vi har imidlertid ikke statistikk for hele vassdraget lenger tid tilbake enn for de siste 20 åra, da vi sammenlagt har tatt opp 1,3 millioner stokker. Årsrekorden ble satt i 1954, da det ble tatt opp 152 000 stokker, hvorav 78 000 ved Fetsund og Bingen. I det hele er det ved Bingen denne tømmeropptakingen er mest konsentrert. Jeg skulle tro at mellom 30 og 40 pst. av det årlige kvantum synketømmer som er tatt opp, er hevet ved Fetsund og Bingen, mener direktør Sparby.
Bra resultater også i 1956
I det hele tatt er det blitt tatt opp atskillige kvanta tømmer i etterkrigsåra, mens virksomheten var mer beskjeden under krigen. I 1956 ble det tatt opp 50 000 stokker ved Bingen og Fetsund, mens resultatet i fjor var 26-27 000 stokker.
Vesentlig til cellulosefabrikasjon
Det alt vesentlige av synketømmeret går ellers til cellulosefabrikasjonen. Limstoffet er utvasket etter så lang tid på elvebunnen, slik at det er umulig å få det til å flyte etter at det er tatt opp. Fra attholdslensene blir det fraktet på slep, på droggene, ned til Fetsund, der det blir dradd på land – og fraktet videre på bil eller med jernbane.
15 000 stokker hittil i år
I år er det tatt opp nærmere 15 000 stokker ved Bingen, og arbeidet fortsetter. Men alle de karene vi snakket med da vi forleden var ute på elva sammen med lenseformannen Adolf Vestby, ga uttrykk for at de syntes det ble lenger og lenger mellom stokkene på elvebunnen. Elva kan være 6 – 8 meter djup, og karene finner stokkene på den måten at de står på droggene og saumfarer bunnen med lange raier med ekstra skarp pigg i enden, som de hogger inn i stokken. Ved to manns hjelp lykkes det å få stokkene opp av vannet. De ligger jo som regel i strømretningen.
Nye lag med tømmer – stadig eldre
Når det år etter år kan lykkes å dra så mye tømmer opp av elva, skyldes det at synketømmeret må ligge i lag på elvebunnen. Når elva om høsten er rensket opp for et lag med tømmer, så er det et nytt å finne neste høst – naturligvis fordi noe tømmer er sunket under sommerens fløtning – men mest fordi strømmen har ført sand og grus videre nedover, slik at et nytt lag av synketømmer er avdekket – og til lenger ned en kommer, til eldre blir tømmerstokkene.
Snart slutt på synketømmeret?
Det er mye som tyder på at vi nærmer oss slutten på tømmerlagene på elvebunnen, mener direktør Kaare Sparby. Og det samme gir også de erfarne fløterne uttrykk for. Arbeidet med synketømmeret gir ellers kjærkommen beskjeftigelse for en del av den faste arbeidsstokken både ved Bingen og Fetsund – etter at fløtningsprosessen er slutt om høsten.
Kald og sur jobb
Arbeidet kan gjerne ta til i sept. – oktober og kan vare utover mot jul, alt etter hvor mye tømmer det er å finne og hvordan været arter seg, for sannelig kan det være en kald og sur jobb å stå der ute på elva i all slags vær. Det er ingen tvil om at karene foretrekker fløtingsarbeidet, ikke bare fordi det foregår i en behageligere temperatur, men også fordi det sikrer dem jevnere fortjeneste. Det er nemlig akkord også på hevingen av synketømmeret. Dagsakkorden ved Bingen skal visstnok være 28 tylfter på ett lag.
Det er nok ikke snakk om å sette slike rekorder lenger, sier karene i Sørumsandlaget, og klager aldri så lite over at det blir for langt mellom stokkene.»
Det idrettsengasjementet til Adolf Vestby som preget Birger A. Finckenhagens minneord om ham i Romerikes blad 4. mars 1975:
«Med Adolf Vestbys død er det siste medlem av det første styret i Sørumsand Idrettsforening borte. Fotball var hans idrettsgren. Han er en av dem som har fulgt foreningens arbeid i alle år, og han er en av dem vi kan takke for at vi fikk sikret oss det store arealet til Idrettsparken – og at vi fikk det så rimelig. Det er ham vi kan takke for at vi fikk lov å legge Vestbyparken der den ligger i dag.
Det var ungdommens behov for fritidsbeskjeftigelse i en tid da de hadde valget mellom idrettslig utfoldelse og dans på lokalet, som utløste fotball-leken ved stranda, og det var behovet for sunn fritidsbeskjeftigelse som i sin tur ga støtet til organisert idrett – til stiftelsen av Sørumsand Idrettsforening.
Vi vil huske ham i takknemlighet.»

Fløterformannen var kledd i ei tjukk vinterjakke og hadde sixpencelue med ørelapper på hodet. I den ene handa holdt han en spaserstokk, den andre varmet han i jakkelomma. I bakgrunnen skimter vi de såkalte riarkarene ved lenseanlegget.
Norsk Skogbruksmuseum statet det som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma» ved inngangen til arbeidsåret 1984. Da var det klart at den tradisjonsrike tømmerfløtinga i vassdraget ville bli avviklet i 1985. Museet ønsket derfor å få i gang et dokumentasjonsprosjekt der tømmertransporten på vassdraget skulle ha hovedfokus. Historikeren Øivind Vestheim, som hadde arbeidet ved museet fra 1982, skulle ha hovedansvar for prosjektet. Han tok sikte på å samle et representativt utvalg av løse gjenstander fra fløtinga til museet, han ville dokumentere faste fløtingsinnretninger i vassdraget, ta vare på eldre fotografier og arkivalia, samt samle det han kalte «tradisjons- og minnemateriale» med tilknytning til Glomma-fløtinga. Særlig museets fotograf, OT Ljøstad, var en trofast samarbeidspartner under arbeidet med prosjektet. Vestheim og Ljøstad reiste mye langs vassdraget i 1984 og 1985, men også i «oppryddingsfasen» i de par første sesongene etter dette. Glomma fellesfløtingsforening overlot sitt fotoarkiv, som besto av 72 album en del negativmateriale fra ulike deler av vassdraget, til Norsk Skogmuseum. Papirarkivene ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la dem bli liggende i den murte delen av kontorkomplekset Fellesfløtingsforeningen hadde hatt på Fetsund. Der veiledet Øivind Vestheim en del lokale medarbeidere som ble engasjert for å ordne arkivet. Forvaltningen av arkivmaterialet ble etter 1990 overlatt til lensemuseet, som ble etablert på Fetsund dette året. Mange av gjenstandene Vestheim samlet inn til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i forbindelse med prosjektet ble dessverre kjørt direkte på fjernmagasin i Elverum, uten at de ble registrert. Dermed gikk beklageligvis viktig informasjon om proveniens og bruk tapt. Heller ikke de fotografiske opptakene ble tilfredsstillende registrert da de var «ferske». Øivind Vestheim brukte en kassettopptaker som «feltdagbok» under mange av turene langs vassdraget. Bjørn Bækkelund skrev av mange av kassettene etter at han begynte ved museet høsten 1997. Innslagene av «tradisjons- og minnemateriale» på disse opptakene var få. Prosjekt Glomma skulle opprinnelig vare fra og med 1984 til og med 1988, altså i fem år. Det viste seg imidlertid at oppgavene ble mange, og at arbeidet tok lengre tid enn forutsatt. Øivind Vestheim avsluttet sin del av prosjektet med utgivelsen av boka «Fløting gjennom århundrer – Fløtingas historie i Glomma- og Mjøsvassdraget» i 1998. Han sluttet for øvrig ved museet like før boka var ferdig. I ettertid har nye medarbeidere ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum gradvis forsøkt å gjøre noe med det forvaltningsmessige etterslepet etter Prosjekt Glomma.
