Kjerraten i Åsa var et transportanlegg som ble bygd for å transportere tømmer som Peder Anker (1749-1824) fikk fløtet fra skogene han hadde kjøpt på Land og i Valdres til Tyrifjorden over i Nordmarksvassdraget og videre mot Ankers sagbruk på Lysaker. Tømmret skulle trekkes fra ei lense i Orbråtavika i den delen av Tyrifjorden som kalles Steinsfjorden oppover lia til Damtjern og Storflåtan på toppen av åsen. Det var snakk om en distanse på drøyt fire kilometer og en høydeforskjell på 386 meter. Den svenske ingeniøren Samuel Bagge (1774-1814) prosjekterte anlegget, som ble realisert i perioden 1803-1806. Det besto av en serie kjerrater – kjedetrekk som stokkene ble hektet på – og som ble drevet av 11 vasshjul som hentet vann fra Åsaelva. Det ble også bygd en 12. kjerrat som ved hjelp av vann fra Geitmyrbekken, Vikseterbekken og Vambubekken skulle trekke stokkene over den 1 200 meter lange bakkekammen mellom Damtjern og Storflåtan. Dette fungerte imidlertid dårlig, antakelig fordi at vannmengdene ble for små. Følgelig ble det bygd en hestejernbane der stokkene ble trukket på små vogner i stedet. Det sies at gjennomsnittlig transportkvantum skal ha vært 1 500 tylfter tømmer – 18 000 stokker. Peder Anker fikk altså satt kjerraten i drift i 1806, idet en høykonjunktur i trelasthandelen kulminerte. Med et mannskapsbehov på cirka 100 ble kjerraten dyr i drift. Anker fortsatte likevel å bruke den. Etter hans død overtok svigersønnen Herman Wedel Jarlsberg (1779-1840) skogene og kjerratanlegget. Han videreførte driften. Også etter Herman Wedel Jarlsbergs død fortsatte kjerratdriften noen år, men da de solgte familiens skoger på Land og i Valdres i 1848 falt driftsgrunnlaget bort. Etter dette ble det bare transportert småkvanta som hadde blitt «inneliggende» under fløtinga høyere oppe i vassdraget, før man i 1850 startet rivinga av anlegget. Jernkomponentene ble stort sett smeltet om ved Bærums verk, mens en del av treet ble «resirkulert» til trekol. Ingeniør Arve Frydenlund er fra Åsa, og interessert seg for det tekniske anlegget som bare sto fundamenter igjen av da han vokste opp. I 1970-åra foretok Frydenlund et registreringsarbeid som ble grunnlag for rekonstruksjonstegninger. Disse tegningene ble utgangspunkt for et modellarbeid som vaktmester Håkon Sæle og utstillingsleder Jostein K. Nysæther ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum utførte med litt bistand fra elver ved Elverum videregående skole i 1980. Modellen var utført i glassfiber, tre og metall. Den viste hvordan kjerraten var plassert i landskapet – mellom Steindfjorden og Storflåtan – og den gav i en noe større målestokk et inntrykk av de tekniske løsningene ved kjerrat nummer 7 og 8. Her var det rennende vann, og vasshjulene gikk, slik at det var mulig å hekte pinner på kjettingene, og dermed vise hvordan tømmeret ble trukket oppover motbakkene. Dessverre oppsto det lekkasjer etter hvert, i samband med bygginga av den nye basisutstillingen «Tid for Skog» (1999-2001) ble modellen demontert. Noen få elementer ble gjenbrukt i en atskillig enklere modell som fikk plass i den nevnte utstillingen. Arve Frydenlund skrev også en artikkel om kjerraten, som ble publisert i Norsk Skogbruksmuseums årbok nr. 9 (1981). Dette fotografiet er tatt av museets fotograf i forbindelse med modellbyggings- og artikkelskrivingsarbeidet i 1980. Seinere er det etablert et lite kjerratmuseum i Åsa, som er åpent for interesserte sommerstid.

Denne muren var fundament for en grov treaksling med et roterende overfallshjul og med et drivhjul som trakk kjerringen fra det nedenforliggende kjerrathjulet med de tømmerstokkene som kom derfra. Murverket var også fundament for en plattform av tre, der det i driftsperioden sto noen karer og trakk stokkene over fra det nedenforliggende kjettingstrekket over på det ovenforliggende, som ble drevet av et vasshjul noe høyere oppe i lia. Arve Frydenlund, som har studert dette anlegget, mener at vasshjula her må ha hatt en diameter på 7,5 til 8 meter, og en bredde på bortimot 1,8 meter. Hjulkjellerne var om lag 7 meter lange og snaut 3 meter høye. Alle opprinnelige trekonstruksjoner var borte da dette fotografiet ble tatt. Det vokste forholdsvis store grantrær i hjulhusruinen da dette fotografiet ble tatt, men den var likevel godt «lesbar» som kulturminne.
Dette fotografiet inngår i en serie som museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad tok i Åsa i Ringerike kommune våren 1980. Opptakene ble gjort med tanke på at museet var i ferd med å ferdigstille en utstillingsmodell av kjerratanlegget, samtidig som ingeniør Arve Frydenlund arbeidet med en artikkel om kjerraten til museets årbok nr. 9 (1978-1981).
