Rymbilen var opphaveleg eit tjørn, delt frå sjøen med ein jordrygg. Det gjekk kanalar mellom ryggen ut til sjøen, og nivået i tjørna endra seg i takt med flo og fjøre. Det er to tolkingar på Rymbil-namnet. Den eine tek utgangspunkt i jordryggen mellom tjørna og sjøen, rymb, som i følgje Ross er ein "lang, lav halvvalseformig jord- eller grusrygg". Altså må det ha vore sjølve jordryggen som har vore Rymbilen, men etter kvart har også tjørna voer omfatta av namnet. Ei anna tolking er nemnd av Kristoffer Eitrheim. Han tek utgangspunkt i tjørna som hevar og senkar seg lik som magen til ein mann som ligg og søv. "Rymbill er ein som bles seg upp jamt og samt".
