Harpefossen i Gudbrandsdalslågen ligger lengst nord i Sør-Fron kommune. Fem-seks kilometer sørøst for kommunesenteret Vinstra i nabokommunen Nord-Fron, ved garden Solbrå, snevres Lågen inn i ei trang kløft mellom bratte, nesten loddrette bergvegger, altså en canyon. Gjennom canyonen har Lågen et fall på cirka 25 meter over en strekning på cirka en kilometer. Det største fallet var Solbråfossen, som lå ved innløpet til dette trange partiet. Nedenfor var elveløpet så smalt og «ureint» at vannet i flomperioder ble virvlet oppover de høye fjellveggene. Her har strid strøm med stein og grus i skapt jettegryter. Det var svært vanskelig å fløte tømmer gjennom Harpefossen, og spesielt når det var liten vannføring hadde tømmerstokkene lett for å filtre seg sammen i hauger som det var farefullt å ta seg ned til og løsne. I begynnelsen av 1960-åra fikk energiselskapet Opplandskraft konsesjon for å regulere dette fallet. Utbygginga ble realisert i 1964-65 med firmaet Høyer-Ellefsen som hovedentreprenør. Dette prosjektet skapte et vannmagasin på 994 kubikkmeter i overkant av canyonen. To vertikale trykksjakter med et fall på 34,5 meter nedenfor fossen. Stasjonen har to aggregater med en samlet effekt på 92 megawatt (2018).

Harpefossen var navnet på en cirka en kilometer lang strekning i Gudbrandsdalslågen, hvor vassdraget hadde et fall på om lag 25 meter over en strekning på om lag en kilometer, i et terreng der eleveløpet gikk gjennom et trangt skar omgitt av bratte bergvegger. Ved høy vannføring gikk fløtinga likevel ganske greit her, men ved lavvann kunne det lett oppstå situasjoner som den vi ser på dette fotografiet. Å løsne slike tømmervaser eller hauger var naturligvis farlig arbeid. Dette fotografiet er tatt fra brua over fossegjelet ned mot elveløpet, der en del tømmer hadde strandet på oppstikkende steinblokker. Dette virket gjaldt det å få løsnet raskt, slik at det ikke ble liggende som en propp for alt tømmeret som etter hvert kom ovenfra.
Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe de kalte «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette innebar at historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad fulgte fløtinga i vassdraget med kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløting om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten fløtinga hadde vært. En del installasjoner i vassdrag måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noe ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for papirarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum da fløtinga opphørte. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. OT Ljøstad reproduserte størstedelen av motivene ved hjelp av mellomformatkamera med negativ svart-hvitt-film. Materialet ble også enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført.
