Skogen gav råstoff til trelast- og treforedlingsindustrien, som lenge var blant Norges viktigste eksportnæringer. For å sørge sikker råstofftilgang til disse industriene var det viktig å effektivisere skogproduksjonen og å utvide de produktive arealene, blant annet ved å drenere myr og det som ble kalt «vannsyk skogmark» med sikte på å omdanne slikt terreng til «produktiv skogsmark». De første drengeringsforsøkene på slike arealer ble gjort på andre halvdel av 1800-tallet, med hakker og spader som arbeidsredskaper. Resultatene var vekslende, men i noen tilfeller kunne man påvise betydelige tilvekstøkninger hos trær på drenerte arealer. Dette var noe av bakgrunnen for at grøfting ble en av de aller viktigste sakene til Det norske Skogselskap, som ble etablert i 1898. Organisasjonen fungerte som statens bindeledd mot privatskogbruket, og grøftetilskudd var et av de viktigste virkemidlene man hadde. Det ble utbetalt en god del slike tilskudd de par første tiåra på 1900-tallet, men grøftingsaktiviteten stagnerte etter det store økonomiske krakket som rammet næringa tidlig i 1920-åra. Grøftingsaktiviteten vokste betydelig igjen i 1930-åra, dels gjennom nødsarbeidsprosjekter. Under 2. verdenskrig fikk man en ny stagnasjonsperiode på dette arbeidsfeltet. I 1941 ble forstmannen Per Thurmann-Moe engasjert som statskonsulent i skoggrøfting. Etter 2. verdenskrig arbeidet han ivrig for å få opp igjen grøfteaktiviteten, blant annet med dynamitt som hjelpemiddel. Sprengingsprosessen hadde en dramaturgi som appellerte til mange i skogbruket. Når dynamittpatronene i grøftetraseen ble detonert, føk myrtorv, stein og røtter til værs og falt ned igjen i et bredt belte omkring grøfta, som deretter måtte renskes med handredskap. Metoden innebar likevel en betydelig lettelse i forhold til grøftegraving der hakke og spade var de eneste redskapene. Både manuell arbeidskraft og dynamitt var imidlertid kostbare innsatsfaktorer i skogkulturarbeidet. Fagmiljøet lette etter nye tekniske løsninger. I det finske skogbruket begynte man tidlig i 1950-åra å eksperimentere med grøfteploger for myrlendte arealer. I 1957 var 70 slike ploger i drift i det finske skogbruket. Det fantes tre typer, og den mest robuste av dem var den såkalte «Lokomo-plogen» - utviklet i samarbeid mellom den finske Forststyrelsen og Lokomo-fabrikken. I 1956 var norske forstkandidater i Finland og fikk se denne grøfteplogen i virksomhet, og året etter sørget Per Thurmann-Moe for at en slik plog ble importert til Norge, der Ivar Samset og hans medarbeidere i Det norske Skogforsøksvesen fikk i oppdrag å teste den på norske myrer.
Lokomoplogen veide 3,8 tonn og kunne pløye grøfter som var 80-100 centimeter djupe. En rullekniv skar et snitt i torva framfor plogbrynet. Vridde veltefjøler av stål, med forlengelser av tre, sørget for at torva ble løftet opp og skjøvet til side. Avstanden mellom grøftekantene og plogveltene kunne reguleres. Lokomo-plogen hadde to digre, brede stålhjul, som skulle fungere som «flytevalser» og hindre at plogen dro seg for djupt ned i myra. Den var videre utstyrt med en spesiell vektstanganordning, som gjorde det mulig å løfte plogen over hindringer i terrenget. Stubber, småtrær og på mindre enn en halv kubikkmeters størrelse kunne den imidlertid velte til side. Finnene brukte store, 12-tonns beltetraktorer som trekkraft. Plogen ble ikke koplet direkte til traktoren, men ble trukket av en vinsj som var montert bak på kjøretøyet. Også i Norge ble Lokomo-plogen først testet med et slikt tungt beltekjøretøy. Det viste seg raskt at det lett grov seg ned i de våte norske myrene. Ivar Samset og hans kolleger gikk derfor over til å bruke en seks tonns traktor med belter som ble utvidet til 85-100 centimeters bredde. Bak på traktoren monterte de en vinsj som hadde åtte tonns trekkraft. Dette viste seg å være altfor lite til trekke den tunge plogen gjennom våte myrer. Derfor satte de inn en blokk mellom vinsjen og plogen, noe som økte trekkevnen til bortimot 15 tonn. Beltetraktoren ble for øvrig utstyrt med et bakmontert skjær, som kunne senkes og heves hydraulisk. Når skjæret ble satt ned i marka, bidro det til at traktoren sto stille under innvinsjinga. Pløyinga foregikk etappevis – traktoren ble kjørt 40-60 meter framover i den retningen en ønsket at grøfta skulle gå. Deretter ble plogen vinsjet etter, inntil den sto 10-15 meter bak traktoren, som deretter ble flyttet nye 40-60 meter framover. Slik fortsatte arbeidet. Under gode forhold kunne et tremannslag (traktorfører, hjelpemann og plogmann) pløye 1 500 - 2 000 meter grøft på en arbeidsdag. Samset mente at bruk av Lokomo-plog ville redusere grøftekostnadene betydelig – vel og merke under når det dreide seg om store dreneringsprosjekter. Bruken av den store, tunge plogen og beltetraktoren som skulle være trekkraft innebar nemlig store transportkostnader ved flytting fra arbeidssted til arbeidssted. Gjennomgående små eiendommer der eiendommene hadde begrensede midler å investere i omvandling av myr til produktiv skogsmark kan ha vært en av årsakene til at Skogforsøksvesenets Lokomo-plog ble den eneste i Norge. I stedet ble det eksperimentert med en noe mindre, norskprodusert grøfteplogtype, Vikeid-plogen. Mesteparten av grøftingsarbeidet i det norske skogbruket fra midten av 1950-åra og framover ble imidlertid utført ved hjelp av traktormonterte gravemaskiner.

Vaieren fra den havarerte traktoren (til venstre) til kjøretøyene som skulle få den opp (til høyre) gikk via toppen på disse bukkene, antakelig for å for å få trukket den opp fra de våte torvmassene, ikke horisontalt bortover i myra. Uhellet skjedde i forbindelse med grøfteforsøk der den store, tunge, finskproduserte «Lokomo-plogen» ble testet. Dette var ikke første gang at traktorene sank ned i myrtorva under slike forsøk. Da forsøkene startet fire år tidligere brukte man 12 tonn tunge beltetraktorer, slik finnene gjorde, men det viste seg at de sank ned i de våte norske myrene. Forsøksleder Ivar Samset og hans mannskap gikk derfor over til å bruke noe lettere beltetraktorer, der beltene ble påmontert 85 centimeter lange treelementer, som skulle gi bedre bæreevne. Likevel hendte det at traktorene sank ned i den våte myrtorva, som da dette fotografiet ble tatt. Her måtte det leies inn maskiner for å få dem kostbare beltetraktoren opp igjen, noe som i Det norske Skogforsøksvesens album er beskrevet slik: «Opptauing av nedsunket bulldozer. Grøfteforsøkene. Falken tok 7 500,- kr. for arbeidet. Vi leide i tillegg bulldozer fra Glomma fellesfløtningsforening (kr. 500) og holdt 5 mann. Falken er dyr og kan ikke anbefales.» Mer informasjon om Lokomo-plogen finnes under fanen «Opplysninger».
Dette fotografiet er hentet fra ei samling som er skapt av og har tilhørt Det norske Skogforsøksvesen (1917-1972), Norsk institutt for skogforskning [NISK] (1972-2006) og Norsk institutt for skog og landskap (2006-) på Ås i Akershus. Tore Vik, som gjennom mesteparten av sin skogfaglige karriere var forsker ved de nevnte institusjonene, tok kontakt med Norsk Skogmuseum om arkivene etter virksomheten i 2007, året etter den gang siste omorganisering av virksomheten. De gamle arkivene med dokumenter og fotografier fra Avdeling for driftsteknikk forekom ikke den nye ledelsen relevante, og det ble reist spørsmål om Riksarkivet i Oslo eller Skogmuseet i Elverum kunne bidra til bevaring. Museet sa seg villig til å påta seg denne oppgaven. Avtale om overtakelse av fotoarkivet ble inngått i 2008. Materialet består av positivkopier i brevordnere, film i konvolutter og dias. Til sammen anslås det å omfatte cirka 27 000 opptak, i hovedsak fra perioden 1947-1990. Mye av materialet er fra prosjekter Avdeling for driftsteknikk har hatt i norsk skogbruk, men en god del er også fra reiser professor Ivar Samset gjorde som leder for den internasjonale skogforskningsorganisasjonen IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations). Kvaliteten på opptakene er varierende.
