Feltsjukehuset vart kalla Keisarbrakka på folkemunne fordi det var ei gåve frå den tyske keisar Wilhelm II som var i Odda kvar sommar frå 1891 til 1914. I 1908 hadde Leonie Petersson - direktør Albert Petersson si tyske kona - overtydd keisaren om at Odda trong eit sjukehus for å kunne ta seg av sjuke og såra. Keisaren stilte med materiale og utstyr til sjukehuset, medan kommunen forplikta seg til å stilla med tomt og vatn, AS Tyssefaldene med den naudsynte elektrisiteten. Fabrikken og kommunen skulle dela på utgifter til diakonisse. Då bygget stod ferdig i 1909, inneheldt det operasjonsstove med tidsmessig utstyr og tre sjukerom med 3-4 senger i kvart rom. Dessutan eit lite kjøken, bad, toalett og opphaldsrom for dei som arbeidde der. Utstyret var tilsvarande eit feltsjukehus.
Avskrift frå protokoll for Odda bygningskommune, sak 173, år 1908:
"... forærede sykehus, der agtes opført på den af Ola Hagen m.fl dertil indkjøbte tomt i ureguleret strøk på Mjøstølen. Huset opføres i 3 m afstand fra naboeiendom og 5 a 6 m fra Tungebrækkeveien".Avskrift frå protokoll for Odda bygningskommune, sak 174, år 1908:
"Anmeldelse på opførelse af del af H. M. den tyske keiser til bygningskommunen forærede sykehus, der agtes opføre på den af Ola Hagen m.fl. dertil kjøbte tomt på Mjøstølen. Tomten, der gjennemskjæres af Sansare bækken og vei til Kjoadalen er ca 1300m2 stor, flat og tør. Grunden består af sten og sand. Huset, der er 15,4 m langt og 6,14 m bredt, opføres på gråstensfundament. I østlige del af tomten utgraves 6 m lang kjælder i tomtens hele bredde. Dens høide blir 2,5 m. Selve sykehuset opføres i træ i 1 etage og efter fra fabriken i Tyskland mottagne tegninger. Sykepavillionen efter Döchers system kan tages fra hverandre og flyttes".
Enstemmig: Huset tillates opfört i overensstemmelse med fremlagte tegninger og byggekommiteens forslag. Jørgen Prestegaard, Johs. Apold, Ola J. Digranæs, Johs Mandsaker, O Kvam.
Men gåva viste seg å verta dyr for kommunen, som ikkje hadde dei naudsynte midlane. Byggekommunens representantar tok opp eit personleg lån, slik at feltsjukehuset kunne stå nokonlunde ferdig til keisaren kom attende til Odda sommaren etter. Ei diakonisse vart tilsett, men ho var aleine om å ta seg av hushald og pasientar, og heldt berre ut eit par månader før ho gav opp og reiste frå Odda. Sjukehuset vart midlertidig stengd. Odda soknestyre tok sin del av ansvaret, og avtala vart at soknestyret og fabrikken delte utgifter til drift og andre forpliktingar, noko som gjorde at sjukehuset kunne takast i bruk innan sommaren 1910. Feltsjukehuset stod på vestsida av Bustetungata, i krysset mellom Tjoadalen og Berjaflotvegen. Då det ikkje vart nytta som sjukehus meir, vart det etter 2. verdskrig gjort om til husvære for to familiar fram til det vart rive i 1952. Odda Kommunale forening stod for rivinga, og materiala vart nytta til hyttebygging for medlemmene. Etter rivinga anla kommunen parken nedst i Tjoadalen som fekk namnet "Keiserplassen".
Feltsjukehuset "keiserbrakka" er ofte omtala som lasarettet, noko som skuldast at då Odda kommunale sjukehus sto ferdig i 1918 vart keiserbrakka omgjort til epidemilasarett. Eit anna bygg vart også sett opp og bruka som epidemilasarett. Det sto like nord for keiserbrakka, sør for Odda bedehus. Dette vart nytta som barnehage og klubbhus frå 1950 til 1970-talet og vart omtala som "Lasarettet".
