Det er lange tradisjoner for å brenne kol i norske bygder, både til husbruk i egne gardssmier og for salg til blant bergverksvirksomheter, som var storforbrukere av kol. Vegårshei, som lå innenfor cirkumferensen til det gamle Nes jernverk har det vært brent trekol både til lokale smeder og til Båsland eller Nes jernverk (1665-1959), både til verkets masovner og til essene i lokale smier. Da dette bildet ble tatt brant Jørn Romundstad, som en av de siste, kol til bruk i egen smie. Kolbrenninga er en tørrdestillasjonsprosess, der trevirke eksponeres for høy varme uten tilgang på oksygen. Dette gjøres i miler. Kolveden skulle lufttørkes før den ble satt i mile. Mileplassene, kolbotnene, skulle helst plasseres på steder der det var fast, finpartiklet jordsmonn og god tilgang på masse til bedekning av mileveden. Var det for grovkornet og luftig jordsmonn, ville innsiget av oksygen bli for stort, noe som innebar stor fare for at veden ville antennes og brenne opp. I nyere folkelig norsk tradisjon har man helst brent kol i reismiler. Her støttes kolveden mot en midtstokk med to inntappete pinner i overenden, som skjermer det som etter hvert skal bli en tennkanal. På bakken omkring midtstokken la man ei rist av rajer, som både skjermet veden mot fuktighet fra bakken og lettet mulighetene for å regulere oksygentilgangen i tørrdestillasjonsprosessens startfase. På dette underlaget reiste kolbrennerne veden konsentrisk rundt midtstokken, så tett som mulig, for store luftrom i mila kunne forårsake eksplosjoner. Følgelig kunne en heller ikke bruke altfor krokvokst virke. Mileveden skulle sto med rotendene ned, nesten loddrett innerst mot midtstokken, men mer på skrå etter hvert som diameteren på mila vokste. Sideflatene kunne ikke være altfor bratte, for da ville det bli umulig å få miledekket til å ligge. Når all veden var satt på plass ble den dekket med granbar. Barkvistene ble stukket inn mellom vedskiene og festet der. Bardekket skulle bære tjukt på toppen av milene, tynnere nedover sideflatene mot bakken. Baret ble dekt med jord, gjerne iblandet litt kolstubb fra tidligere brenninger på samme kolbotn. Mot de sterkt skrånende sideflatene ble det gjerne satt «stubbehyller», T-formete elementer av tre, som skulle forebygge nedrasninger fra miledekket. Antenninga av milene ble gjort ved å føre brennende ved ned i tennkanalen ved midtstolpen og slippe etter en del finkløvd, tørr ved. I denne fasen skulle det være trekkåpninger langs sidene i bakkenivå (mot den nevnte rista under kolveden). Etter hvert begynte det å komme gul røyk ut av åpningene, både fra tennkanalen og fotåpningene. Når varmen hadde trukket seg godt inn i vedlagene ble åpningene gradvis stengt, stadig med et blikk for at varmen skulle være jamn mot alle sider og at den også skulle trekkes nedover mot bakken, slik at all veden etter hvert kunne forkoles. Forkolingas forløp kunne sjekkes ved hjelp av ei lang, tynn jernstang, et «milespett», som ble stukket gjennom miledekket. Dette dekket ble også stadig klubbet, for å sikre at det ikke oppsto luftlommer med gass som kunne eksplodere og skape revner som åpnet mila for oksygenrik luft. Fikk dette skje, kunne det oppstå en ukontrollerbar brann, slik at mileveden ble til aske i stedet for kol. Etter at forkolingsprosessen var avsluttet ble miledekket tettet og mila fikk stå litt til avkjøling før den skulle rives. Dette var en langsom prosess, for miledekket gav god isolasjon. Rivinga ble utført ved hjelp av ei hakke, i litteraturen ofte kalt «kolkrok». Man startet på toppen og arbeidet seg nedover. I tillegg til kolkroken brukte kolbrennerne ei rive med lange jerntinner, som ble brukt til å skille kolbitene fra jorda i miledekket. Skulle det blusse opp varme, var det viktig å ha tilgang på vann for rask slokking. Kolbitene ble båret fra kolbotnen i vide, flettete korger. Transporten foregikk tradisjonelt på sleder med flettete sidekarmer, eller (i milde, snøfattige strøk) på vogner. Kolutbyttet varierte etter hvilke treslag som ble brukt, dimensjonene på kolveden og hvilke treslag man hadde til disposisjon.
I 1988 skrev Knut Moland følgende artikkel om Jørgen Romundstad i Norsk knivforenings medlemsblad «Knivbladet»:
«Jørgen Romundstad, Vegårshei:
Jørgen Romundstad var født i 1890 på Vegårshei. Han døde i 1972. Han var den fjerde smeden på Romundstadstranda ved Vegår på Vegårshei. Den første smeden var født i 1806, og alle fire hette Jørgen Jørgensen Romundstad. Alle var dyktige smeder, men det var den siste som ble virkelig kjent. De smidde alle slags ting som ble brukt i det gamle bondesamfunnet: redskap, sakser, skjærsakser, sigder, ljåer og kniver. Hestesko og beslag og en rekke andre ting. Først og fremst var de kjent som eggsmeder.
Jørgen Romundstads kniver er ikke vakre. Det er skarpheten, bittet, som har gjort dem kjent. Her er det få, hvis noen, som overgår dem. Jørgen Romundstad var en fåmælt mann, han likte ikke blest om sin egen person, ingen kunne få ut av ham noe som det ikke passet ham å si. Han lærte ikke opp noen. Den kunnskap han hadde om yrket sitt, døde med ham. Han var ugift, og hadde ingen sønn han kunne lære opp, slik hans far lærte opp ham.
Han bodde på en mindre gård sammen med tre ugifte søstre og en bror. Broren assisterte ham i smia, men var ikke selv smed. Han hadde en relativt stor produksjon, dog ikke på langt nær så stor produksjon som mange smeder har i dag. Smia hans står ennå. Den er til den grad bevart at det ser ut som smeden selv bare er ute en tur. Bortsett fra at der ikke er varme, selvfølgelig. Å komme dit er som å ta et skritt inn i folkeeventyrene. Det er som å komme inn i en annen tid. På ambolten ligger et stykke splittet jern med eggstål lagt i. Hammeren ligger ved siden. En diger belg av kalvskinn faner blikket. Gulvet er jordgulv, jern og stål ligger klar til bruk. Alle slags redskaper ligger rundt omkring. Dette miljøet som knivbladet skapes i, er kanskje en av grunnene til knivens popularitet i dag. Her er noe ekte, opprinnelig og tiltalende. Her arbeidet dyktige hender i 150 år.
Hva som var Jørgen Romundstads hemmelighet som smed, vet ingen. Jørgen Romundstad brukte den metoden at han splittet en jernstang og la i eggstål. Det er derfor ikke eggstål helt i nakken på knivene hans. Men dette har jo ingen betydning, da en ikke kan slipe en kniv helt ut. Når han la i eggstålet, brukte han sand og boraks. Ved herdingen brukte han vann fra en bekk like ved. Denne kommer fra en kilde og er sterkt jernholdig. Dette vannet har også vist seg å være udrikkelig. Han hadde vannet stående i en trestamp. Han skiftet det aldri ut, bare etterfylte. Om han tilsatte vannet noe, er ukjent. Han var svært nøye med at det skulle være riktig lys ved herdingen. Det skulle være skumt. Alle hans blad har lik farge. Hadde de ikke det, forkastet han dem. Dette spesielle blåskjæret er det eneste sikre tegnet på et ekte Romundstad-blad. De andre kjennetegnene, som den tykke nakken, skjevheten i nakken, tangen osv. kan enhver middels smed etterligne. Har han et godt øye, kan en kjenne fargen, men det beste er å holde et ekte blad ved siden. Da er det ikke nødvendig å være i tvil. Hvordan lønningen foregikk i detalj, temperaturer osv., er ikke kjent.
Jørgen Romundstad brukte trekull. Stenkull brukte han bare til å fyre opp med. Han brente trekullet selv i mile. Det brant ofte mile på Romundstad. Dette er det få som kan i dag. En mile er, kan man si forenklet, en konstruksjon av tre og jord som skulle brenne slik at det blir trekull og ikke aske. Kunsten er å få det til å ulme og ikke brenne. En slik mile ulmet fra en til to uker under kraftig røkutvikling. Miler er en gammel tradisjon på Vegårshei, der det ble levert mye trekull til de store ovnene på Nes verk.
Jørgen Romundstad brukte såkalt Nes Verkstål. Da det ble umulig å få, gikk han over til Stavangerstål, men dette var han aldri fornøyd med.
Jørgen Romundstad stemplet aldri sine blad, det vet vi med sikkerhet. Han stemplet imidlertid av og til ljåer og sigder. Han hadde bare ett stempel, og det hadde han fra sin far. Stempelet var «JJS». Jørgen Jørgensen Stranda. De kalte seg ofte Stranda, en forkortelse for Romundstadstranda. J’ene ligner I’er, og sammen ligner de en H. Det er lett å ta stempelet for HS. S’en er relativt synlig. Stempelet er relativt stort. Det var vel helst ting som skulle ut av bygda som ble stemplet. Der var vel en konkurranse med Tinn-smedene.
En gang var det en som fortalte ham en historie. Det var to tatere, som kom i krangel. Da sa den ene av dem: «Er du ikke nå grei, så drar jeg Romundstaden». Den historia likte Jørgen. Han var alltid rimelig på prisen på bladene sine, at han etter hvert ble kjent, gjorde ikke at han skrudde opp prisen. Han var svært redd for å gi fra seg en kniv ikke holdt mål, hadde han mistanker, forkastet han kniven. Han hadde nok en relativt stor produksjon i den forstand at han smidde trutt i mange år. Likevel er produksjonen hans mindre enn mange som smir i dag. Han hadde jo ingen moderne teknikk til hjelp og brukte gammeldagse og ofte selvlagede redskaper. Svært mange av bladene hans er slitt helt ned. De var et redskap folk trengte og brukte.
For å si litt om skarpheten og styrken på bladene hans, kan en nevne at under krigen var det flere som daglig barberte seg med et Romundstad-blad. En kan også spikke i jern med dem. En kan skaver fliser av en hestesko uten at bladet tar skade.
I en tid med mye juggel og fjas framstår det ekte, solide kvalitetsmessige ved Jørgens arbeid i grell kontrast. Jørgen Romundstad var en beskjeden mann, det kan nok likevel være at han ville ha satt pris på den stolthet og glede vegårsheiinger og andre tenker på ham med.»

Romundstad og Vevstad rakte kol på milebotnen med langtinnete river. Begge karene var arbeidskledde.
